location based services
Geocognosys is about using geographic information technology. Geocognosys interests lie in the complementary disciplines that work with geographic information, such as Cartography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and Surveying (including GPS). Geocognosys is also concerned with the disciplines that provide the methods and technology to support these fields: Geography, Information Technology, Spatial Analysis, Design, and Communication Theory, to name a few.
All these fields contribute to the theory and methods we use to collect, manage, and disseminate geographic information. Geocognosys seeks to better understand and apply these theories and methods within an information technology environment.
Here you will find information about and links to:
the different "geo" disciplines;
interesting practice and research;
commentary and discussion on methods and tends;
description and analysis of specific methods;
extensive book listings by subject and theme and key book reviews;
the best web and internet resources;
support resources, such as associations, journals and help sites; and
the exploration of applied projects.
No web resource is exhaustive. What we try to do is to provide links to what, in our probably not-so-humble opinion, is the more useful, sensible, and interesting material out there plus some of our own observations.
As with any emergent discipline, the terminology used to describe this field is often confusing, with many professional, political and geographical twists and turns. At the broadest level, the discipline is referred to as GIS, geo-spatial science, geomatics, geo-informatics, spatial information systems...the list goes on. Geocognosys attempts to take a holistic view, bringing together ideas and practice from as broad a perspective as is possible.
This site will not contain the latest, greatest, fastest breaking news about the geospatial world. Check out the different blogs and news services for all of that. Geocognosys exists to provide observation and commentary that is free from commercial, professional, and sector bias. Which leaves my own biases, which are perhaps revealed in the perspectives section of the Site Notes page. Rather than complete, exhaustive lists, I try to put together what I feel are the most useful or sensible of what is out there. Geocognosys is probably best used as a filter, assuming your perspectives are similar to mine. Read on and see if that is so.
Geocognosys seeks to continually evolve as the various spatial disciplines change and different issues arise. Your input is always welcome in achieving this task [e-mail] .
This site follows a traditional left-side, top-down, menu structured navigation. To minimize reloads and give users a place to come back to if lost, all out-of-site links and links open in new pages and are shown thus:. The side-bar menu always acts as a breadcrumb trail
