Microsoft Corp. and Japanese wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo said Thursday the latter company would incorporate Windows Media technologies in its high speed-connected mobile phones.

Microsoft's Windows Media Audio and Digital Rights Management 10 software would ship first with DoCoMo's F902iS model, which is scheduled for release this summer. DoCoMo is evaluating Microsoft's Windows Media Video for future handsets.

The initial deployment of Microsoft software will enable DoCoMo phones connected to its high-speed FOMA network to play music downloaded from the Internet or from a PC. Key to making music available is the ability to protect copyright holders through Microsoft DRM software.

"Microsoft's Windows Media platform and the company's commitment toward enabling new digital rights management solutions for the wireless environment are helping to push the industry forward," Takeshi Natsuno, senior vice president, managing director for multimedia services at DoCoMo, said in a statement.
