Google Earth and Second Life Mashups: Virtual Worlds Meet Geospace
location based services
We'll look at how location and mapping function in virtual worlds like Second Life and World of Warcraft, and explore how those services are converging with the more traditional 2D Web — as well as with the 3D world around us. Immersive virtual spaces are becoming more and more prevalent on the Web, and are already generating their own brand of Where 2.0-style applications. With millions of people now spending countless hours in massively multiplayer online games and other 3D social spaces, Web-connected digital maps will only become more and more integral to our online experience.
In a nutshell: I love Second Life. I love Google Earth. I want them to marry each other and have babies. I want a 3D avatarized gameSpace map of the planet: the convergence of Neal Stephenson's metaverse and David Gelernter's mirror worlds. I want my Where 3pointD!
