$200m gas project

THE $200 million Santos Casino project launched yesterday in Port Campbell will produce enough natural gas daily to supply nearly a million homes.
Victorian Energy and Industries Minister Theo Theophanous said the project confirmed the state's reputation as the energy centre of south eastern Australia and gave the south-west status as Victoria's new energy hub.
Raw, untreated gas will be delivered to the plant from the Casino gasfield discovered by Santos, Australian Worldwide Explorations and Mittwell.
The field is about 30 kilometres south-west of Port Campbell in the Otway Basin.
The state's energy supply will receive an extra 120 terajoules a day as a result of the project which created 300 construction jobs and about 1300 other jobs.

Mr Theophanous dispatched the first full flow of natural gas from the master control room of the TRUenergy Iona gas plant where all Casino gas will be processed.
``Natural gas from Victoria's Casino gas field will be piped across our state and will also supply South Australia and the other eastern states,'' Mr Theophanous said.
``Securing additional natural gas supplies from the Casino field comes at a great time for Victoria, with the demand for gas predicted to grow by an average of three per cent a year.
Mr Theophanous said the largest ever one-year expansion in the Victorian resources sector would occur this year with $2.5 billion in new projects expected to come on line during 2006, creating thousands of new jobs.
Managing director of TRUenergy, Richard McIndoe said Casino would provide customers with a new, independent source of natural gas, reducing the risk of possible gas shortages.
Annual production is expected to be 35 petajoules a year, enough to supply more than 10 per cent of Victoria's gas demand.
