Benefon selects Telcontar's RME software for new handset

location based services

The Rich Map Engine (RME) software from Telcontar, a supplier of software platforms and services for the Location-Based Services (LBS) industry, has been selected by Benefon, a provider of GSM/GPS mobile telematics terminals and solutions.

Benefon selected the RME software to location-enable its new TWIG Discovery GPS/GSM handset, which combines GSM telephony with GPS-enabled navigation.

The RME from Telcontar enables the handset to calculate the best route and includes support for user-defined routes, feature navigability and multi-modal routing such as via foot and ferry. It enables map information to be integrated in real-time with GPS in order to determine position and can edit, customise and download maps over-the-air.

The handset offers location-based and navigation applications such as routing with voice prompted turn-by-turn instructions and points of interest. It also provides SMS messaging, current speed, real-time traffic reports, family and friends finding and tracking, SOS messages and speed/safety camera positions.
