redgeographics writes "According to this BBC article, drivers following satellite navigation systems through a village called Crackpot in North Yorkshire have been directed along a track at the edge of a 100ft cliff. The article mentions that one company supplying data for these navigation systems has already removed the offending road." This story is discussed by Slashdot. mdflynn writes "After a vacation or even a short trip, it's gratifying to be able to look back on a map and follow where you've been and the places you've visited. It would be even better if your travels could be tracked automatically, and even let your family and friends see where you are as you travel from place to place. Here's an open source solution that can turn your Palm Treo 650 Smartphone into a GPS tracking device and have the data sent back to your computer over the phone's wireless data service, where you'll even be able to view the data on a map."

Spatially Adjusted pointed me to two interesting new betas from Google: with Google Real Estate and Google Cars you can now get a map of your searches for items from Google Base. Many screenshots in the links above. Google Real Estate Beta (or whatever the official name will be) seems to work only within the US. Am I wrong?

Directions Mag run an interview with Dana Fenner, Market Director for Fleet Logistics and Tele Atlas North America. From the interview: "We believe the major carriers will be using LBS technology to their best advantage once they deploy it beyond tracking and leverage it more as a tool to help truckers plan faster, safer routes. [...] JF: Anything else you would like to contribute on market development? Please feel free to comment. DF: One area to watch is predictive traffic information, incorporated into routing software for fleets. Any variable added to the application that improves the ability to create efficient routes will help cut costs on drive times."

The Google Maps API are updated to version 2. From the official blog: "In conjunction with this launch, we've updated the terms and conditions for the Maps API. In particular, we've clarified and updated the two parts of our terms that have troubled developers the most: - No page view limits. Your site can get as many page views as you can muster. If, however, your site gets more than 500,000 page views per day, we ask that you talk to us before you launch so that we can prepare in advance to handle your traffic. - 90-day notice before any advertising-related change. The Maps API does not include advertising. If we ever decide to change this policy, we will give all developers at least 90 days' notice via this blog."

Stephen Armstrong writes "Hi there, I was pointed in this direction when I asked the following question below. I hope someone is finally able to help me out with this and thank you for your time. I am currently doing a little research project as to the feasibility of using satellite imagery or aerial photography to determine the turbidity of the whole New Zealand coastline foreshore. Obviously this is a very large subject area and as such secchi disk or turbidimeter observations would only be secondary information as Quality Control and a large scale technique is required – currently my only information comes from investigating the various remote sensing, GIS and satellite imagery websites.
I have managed to determine that it is indeed possible to determine turbidity information from satellite imagery. All I have so far determined is that an algorithm needs to be applied and various other factors taken into consideration. As such I am none the wiser as to the real process, satellite imagery available (for purchase or free), the length of time it takes to determine turbidity from satellites etc. I was hoping someone on this listserv has some experience in this field and could help me out with these questions and whether it is indeed the right way to go about determining turbidity over such a large scale - or point me in the right direction as to who can tell me. Thanks a lot for your time, Stephen Armstrong, Graduate Surveyor"

Spatial Galaxy has a funny and interesting account of problems with duplication of datasets. From the blog: "Well maybe its not that bad but organizing and managing your GIS data is difficult. If you need to maintain canonical datasets, the spread of “temporary” and/or “working” copies is your enemy. The problem seems to be directly related to the size of the organization. It becomes particularly grievous when dealing with enterprise data in a large organization."

Directions Mag host an interesting review of NOAA’s Satellite and Information Service Survey and Analysis of Remote Sensing Market Aerial and Spaceborne. From the review: "Here are some key findings in the report: - Most respondents want improvements to existing technologies, rather than new technologies. - African respondents want improved Airborne GPS. - South American respondents want greater ground resolution for aerial and satellite imagery. - U.S. local, state and federal governments want technology integration and better ground resolution. [...] The most important aspect of the report is the discussion of the nature of future technologies. For example, small, cheap, easy lift micro-satellites can provide access to this technology to a much broader base of users and vendors."
