Are you looking for an excuse to buy yourself a GPS device? Try the eco-way. A provider of digital maps has quantified the benefits to be reaped by using a navigation device in your car. Among them: shortening the trip duration by 13 percent and reducing emissions by 7 percent.
TeleAtlas has just released the findings of a study about the benefits of using navigation devices (the company sells mapping data to the device manufacturers). The procedures used for the study are unknown, but they say that using a GPS navigator in your car shortens the distances by 5 percent on average, so the trip duration is reduced by 13 percent.
According to TeleAtlas, wrong turns are also reduced by 37 percent, and drivers have to stop 33 percent less times in order to reorient themselves. Also, collisions and accidents are reduced by 2.5 percent, thanks to improved warnings at intersections and rail crossings. Finally, a GPS-equipped car burns 12.5 percent less fuel, so it sends 7 percent less pollutants up to the atmosphere.
Therefore, you have at last an unbeatable excuse to indulge yourself this Christmas season with a GPS gadget, and you can forget forever how to read a paper map.
