Europe To Increase GPS In Mobile Phones
location based services
Although Europe is lagging in its uptake of GPS in mobile phones behind the US (where it was mandated) and Japan (where they just like new technology) it’s beginning to catch up, according to the BBC. The article goes through the sort of services GPS will enable, and mentions that the Gallileo system (Europe’s equivalent of GPS) is behind schedule and so the industry can’t develop for it. It quotes research firm Canalys as saying that in 2006 there were nearly 12 million GPS devices sold around the world, and it expects that to increase to 28 million next year, with Europe increasing its uptake of the technology.
