Nokia starts global positioning service

Nokia started a new service in which, it said, dramatically cuts the time a GPS-enabled cellphone takes to pinpoint its whereabouts, opening new business opportunities for location-based services.
So far, the long startup which takes up to three minutes in good conditions, has hampered takeup of cellphone navigation. But Nokia hopes the service, available for users of its flagship N95 phones, will cut that time to one minute.
Nokia, the world's largest cellphone maker, bought into the navigation industry last year through its acquisition of German firm Gate5 and started to offer free maps and routing data in February 2007, while charging extra fees for turn-by-turn navigation.

Sprint announced it is working with Google to develop a new mobile Internet portal using WiMax wireless technology to offer Web search and social networking. The collaboration between Sprint and Google will help spur new mobility and location-assisted services as Sprint untethers Internet access for consumers, businesses and government customers.


Sprint network bandwidth, location detection and presence capabilities will be matched with Google's popular communications suite - Google Apps - that combines Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Talk services. Customers will be able to experience a new form of interactive communications, high-speed Internet browsing, local and location-centric services, and multimedia services including music, video, TV and on-demand products.

Sprint will provide open standard APIs (application programming interfaces) to Sprint's go-to-market partners and the Internet developer community to create customized products for browsable devices, facilitating the delivery of personalized and interactive services to consumer, business, public safety and government customers. These services will be available in a variety of WiMax embedded devices, including connection cards, stand-alone modems, laptop computers and consumer electronic devices such as personal media players, mobile Internet devices, gaming devices and phones. Eventually, the WiMax service will be available in vehicles for navigation information, news and entertainment.

Sprint aims to use the emerging WiMax technology to better compete with rival wireless and wired broadband networks. It plans to test the WiMax service in Chicago, Baltimore and Washington by the end of this year, with a goal of attaining coverage for 100 million people by the end of 2008.

These efforts are expected to allow Sprint customers to experience a nationwide mobile broadband network that is designed to offer faster speeds, lower cost, greater convenience and enhanced multimedia quality. The Sprint WiMax mobile broadband network will use the company's extensive 2.5GHz spectrum holdings.

Nokia N95 Voted European Media Phone 2007-2008

: Nokia announced the Nokia N95 multimedia computer has been voted 'the European Media Phone of the Year 2007-2008' by the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA), Europe's leading association for consumer electronics.
Commenting on the award, EISA praised the Nokia N95 as containing "practically every feature one could imagine in a mobile device." Additionally, the award citation of the EISA jury goes on to say: "It's no mere mobile phone and no mere status symbol. Sydney goes fuzzy ahead of APEC summit


Internet world superpower Google has denied conducting an Oz-blurring black op with its client state the US of A, which appears to have thrown out of focus swathes of Sydney ahead of the forthcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
For those of you not up to speed on APEC, the Lucky Country will from 2 September host 21 world leaders including George Bush, necessitating the mobilisation of 5,000 police and army personnel who have been assigned to "lock down the city", as the Sydney Morning Herald puts it.
Accordingly, the Sydney Opera House, Convention Centre, and the NSW Government House will be off-limits to law-abiding citizens and al-Qaeda alike. And just in case the Friends of Ozzie decide to rain airborne death on the city's central business district, it appears they won't be using Google Earth to do it:
Speech Recognition and GPS Key to iPhone Killer Strategy

With the much hyped and as yet hypothetical GoogPhone, Google is rumoured to be addressing the user interface issues associated with mobile Internet search. On current handsets, not only is it difficult to navigate expanding user menus, but minute keypads have made text entry frustrating, creating a barrier to Internet usage. IMS Research says that it believes that speech I/O and GPS could well be key ingredients in Google and Microsoft's mobile Internet strategy.


Speech I/O technologies have made enormous technology steps over the last five years to the point where speaker-independent solutions are now poised to solve many of the handset I/O problems. Speech I/O is emerging as a cellular technology trend in its own right. It appears to have gone as yet unnoticed by the masses, but a relatively large percentage of handset shipped in 2006 had a high-quality speech recognition solution embedded.
In a recent report, IMS Research forecasts that the market is forecast to increase five fold over the next four years.
Senior Analyst, Patrick Connolly, stated, "In an extremely competitive market, companies from all sides of the cellular industry are looking to address this high?potential market. Outside of established third party developers, such as VoiceSignal, Infinity Telecoms and Nuance, leading handset manufacturers, including Nokia, Motorola and LG, have developed proprietary automatic speech recognition (ASR) solutions. Furthermore, the emergence of distributed speech recognition (DSR) technologies is bringing leading Internet companies to the mobile search market"
DSR solves the problem of efficiently entering Internet search requests via an embedded thin client. By utilising network-based search engines and processing capability (two things Google has in abundance) to perform the search, the information retrieved is fast, up-to-date and accurate. Recently, Google and Microsoft have been involved in acquisitions, high-profile recruitment and beta testing in the area of speech I/O and DSR, suggesting this is a key long term strategy of theirs.
Connolly went on to say, "the beauty of this technology is that it facilitates the introduction of an advertising-based revenue model to the mobile Internet without being intrusive to the end user, a problem the entire cellular industry has strived to solve over the last two years. With walled gardens crumbling, unlimited data-prices emerging and filtering technologies like GPS becoming commonplace, the market has never been better placed to offer high quality mobile Internet search. Speech I/O will bring these changes together by solving the problem of user friendly search entry".
Mobile Internet searching is inextricably linked to the location-based services (LBS) market, which is driven by GPS and is already emerging as a large revenue generator for operators.
Research analyst Matia Grossi, commented "As mapping solutions switch from on-board to Internet-based off-board solutions, speech creates an I/O interface that is user friendly and completely handsfree for the in-car environment. From a services point of view, as well as being an underlying technology for LBS, GPS can be used to focus Internet search content on the end-users location, a key dynamic for handsets. Long term, IMS Research believes that both LBS and Internet search will converge into a compelling service package"
IMS Research believes that it won't be long before leading handset manufacturers and Internet search giants look to combine these technologies. Nokia's has already developed a GPS-LBS platform with the new 6110 having both speech I/O and GPS capability. Both Google and Microsoft have spent a lot of time developing high-quality cellular mapping applications. Furthermore, Google research director, Peter Norvig, has indicated that Google is currently spending more on speech and translation than any other area.

Dutch Company Bets on Interactivity to Make G.P.S. Devices More Useful in the U.S.

MILAN, Aug. 12 — If you have ever been lost on the tiny, twisting, one-way back streets of Prague, Brussels or Milan, you have a pretty good idea why navigation devices that use the Global Positioning System are vastly more popular in Europe than in the United States.

But what if that same device could also inform you about an accident on your route just minutes after it happened, or could tell you the average time a drive would take depending on the hour and day of the week?

It then becomes an appealing proposition for anyone who has experienced random traffic on the freeways of Los Angeles or the avenues of New York.

“If you make four right turns in New York, you are in the same spot, but if you make four right turns in Rome, you are lost,” Alain A. De Taeye, chief executive of the digital mapmaker Tele Atlas, said.

“If you tell me to get to Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street in New York or most other American cities, I can do that without a navigation device,” he said. “But if you add the right information, you create a map that is compelling also in the U.S. market. Suddenly your navigation device tells you not just how to get from A to B, but also that you shouldn’t leave at 8 a.m. and take Fifth Avenue, but rather leave at 8:10 and take a different street.”

The push to create the constantly updating digital map — what Mr. De Taeye calls “the industry’s holy grail” — is what lies behind the planned $2.7 billion acquisition of Tele Atlas by TomTom, the world’s largest maker of car navigation devices.

The deal, announced last month, would give TomTom, based in the Netherlands, a better chance of gaining market share in the rapidly growing American market for navigation devices. The purchase is to be concluded by the end of the year if it is approved by regulators and Tele Atlas shareholders.

A few years ago, G.P.S. devices were almost exclusively the terrain of high-end cars. But with prices dropping quickly, 15 percent of cars in Europe have G.P.S. and about 8 percent in North America, according to Tele Atlas.

TomTom and Garmin, which has operational headquarters in Kansas, dominate the worldwide market for navigation devices and are pushing the products into the mainstream as they add services and functions like voice activation. In the United States, Garmin has 47 percent of the market and TomTom 16 percent, according to the British research firm Canalys.

TomTom wants to build its United States presence and create a constantly updating digital map. That plan depends in part on contributions from users, who update the company’s map database directly on their devices, and then send that information to TomTom. The company verifies the changes and then makes them available to all users, creating a community of users much like Wikipedia or Amazon.

TomTom’s digital maps will also be enhanced by the acquisition of Tele Atlas, which uses more than 50,000 sources — including satellite photographs, local governments and vans that drive back and forth taking photos — to add new features like three-dimensionality to its maps. (Navteq, the main competitor of Tele Atlas, is also introducing 3-D features.)

The deal will help TomTom increase its revenue and help compensate for the falling profit margins on the sale of navigation devices, said Chris Jones, a vice president and principal analyst with Canalys. Though sales and profit at TomTom have been growing in the last few years, the company’s profit margins have been dropping since 2002 as the prices of the navigation devices have also fallen.

Some analysts criticized TomTom’s deal for Tele Atlas, which gets about 30 percent of its sales from TomTom, but also sells to many TomTom competitors. Those clients might be wary of buying from a direct rival.

But Mr. De Taeye said that with the market expanding so quickly, all companies are going to want to buy the best map available regardless of who makes it. TomTom says about 7 million portable navigation devices will be sold in the United States this year, compared with 2.5 million in 2006. In Europe, about 15 million will be sold compared with 8.5 million in 2006. “You have to be a pessimist to think that market penetration will be only 50 percent in Europe in five years,” Mr. De Taeye said.

The reports today that we could be getting closer to the realization of the long-rumored Google phone. This could happen in one (or both) of two ways for Google: partner or build.

Partnering has been Google's angle into mobile search and services thus far, but it has only allowed it to push through watered down versions of its products such as Gmail for mobile and Maps for mobile. Having its own device would allow it to position itself more predominantly on the home screen, and build applications that are more compelling than carriers have been willing or able to do themselves.

Even if it has its own device however, partnering would require the perennial challenge of working with carriers who are famously unwilling to cede control over every facet of their network and every device that runs on it. Talks so far have only resulted in Verizon scoffing at the search revenue share that Google is asking for in prospective mobile search advertising.

Gphone and iPhone: Catalysts for Change?

This defeatist position on the part of U.S. carriers has been the number one detriment to mobile local search innovation and application development. But the web browsing capabilities of the iPhone could finally be the avenue by which search application developers can sidestep the carrier control over the home screens of devices that run on their networks.

A phone from Google could do the same, if the company pushes its weight around enough, to appeal to carriers with an enticement of brand appeal and revenue boosting possibilities for data consumption, amidst hyper competition and falling revenues in the mobile voice arena. This is similar to how Apple got in bed with AT&T.

The iPhone will soon become compelling enough that other carriers will have to adopt (post-AT&T 2 year contract), despite worries over enabling a device that has wi-fi capability, an elegant browsing experience and other things that could allow consumers to sidestep consumption of carrier voice packets (wi-fi enabled VoIP is one concern here).

The same thing will happen with a prospective Google phone; carriers will come around out of necessity to compete. Give it time.

Go it Alone?

Google’s other possible direction is to go out and buy it’s own wireless spectrum - something it has indicated it would like to do at an upcoming government auction for a swath of open spectrum. This would take years to build and cost billions (I heard Google has some money though); and could land Google in a position, like the carriers, where it is forced to protect a massive investment.

On the bright side, this would essentially make Google its own carrier, with a direct channel to offer consumers all of the things that it has wanted to for years. In the meantime, partnering with carriers is still possible. Carriers will try, unsuccessfully, to block Google's overall forays into the mobile environment, but it will eventually enable it by partnering with the company out of short term competitive necessity.

Either way, we can finally expect to see meaningful innovation in the mobile local search arena. The Gphone itself is rumored to be free to consumers and completely ad supported, which could invoke a welcome sea change in the mobile telecom world.

Combine this with the iPhone’s effect on stimulating mobile local search innovation and application development; and pervasive mobile local search and location based services could be here before we know it.

GPS technology is poised to move beyond personal navigation devices (PNDs) and mobile phones within the consumer market to digital cameras, laptops and personal media devices, market research firm IMS Research said today.

IMS Research believes that these three markets will grow strongly in the following years, with the population of GPS-enabled devices jumping from below the half a million mark in 2006 to 80 million units shipped in 2010, with penetration rates in some of these markets much higher than in cellular. That is the conclusion of the IMS report "The Worldwide Market for GNSS/GPS-enabled Portable Devices."

"PNDs have raised consumer awareness for the capabilities of GPS, which is giving rise to the integration of GPS in other markets," said Matia Grossi, IMS researcher and author of the report. "We will begin to see consumers with digital cameras, personal media players (PMPs) and laptops that have GPS."

Until last year, penetration rates in each of these three markets have been extremely low, mainly because GPS was limited to expensive external devices and professional customers, which are less price-sensitive, according to the market research firm. IMS Research expects each of the three segments to begin launching devices with integrated GPS capabilities in the second half of 2007.

The sharp decrease in the cost of GPS receivers, and the availability of powerful processors and large screens in PMPs and laptops are all drivers in the growing use of GPS in these two markets, IMS concluded. As for digital cameras, it will be the social networking aspect of geotagging photographs, incorporating location data into digital photos' metadata, that will drive GPS applications in that market.

"It is unlikely that customers will use their digital cameras to navigate but they are most likely to use them for some form of social networking applications," Grossi said. "Consumers have increasingly large online (and offline) picture libraries and location will be an important segmentation factor."

Chip-maker claims GPS cost breakthrough Aug. 10, 2007

CellGuide has announced a chip aimed at helping device-makers implement GPS in smartphones and other handhelds at "breakthrough cost." Called the ACLYS, it's said to minimize dedicated GPS silicon requirements by leveraging existing components in a mobile device.

The ACLYS GPS receiver chip is claimed to provide -160 dBm sensitivity and utilize proprietary navigation algorithms, resulting in accurate navigation even in the most demanding urban environments. It comes in a 5 x 5 x 0.9 mm surface-mount (QFN-32) package, which CellGuide says makes it "an ideal solution for mobile devices." Power management reduces power consumption to less than 10 mW in tracking mode, according to the company.

Besides its small size and low power consumption, CellGuide's ACLYS-based GPS architecture spares chip-count -- and hence cost -- by offloading its processing requirements to the "host" device's applications processor. According to product manager Fred Pulver, "the small ACLYS chip together with its associated software (which runs on the host ACPU or DSP) is a complete GPS receiver that outputs its current position (NMEA) to the host."

Pulver explained that the ACLYS can operate either in a completely autonomous GPS mode, or in "assisted GPS" (AGPS) mode, in which case it downloads assistance data over a cellular network. AGPS can provide faster cold starts than autonomous GPS. It also uses "long-term ephemeris" technology, storing satellite information to ensure fast startups even when no cellular network is available.

The ACLYS's applications processor-based software can run on Windows CE and Windows Mobile, the company said. Although the company did not specify applications processor compatibility, the company has in the past integrated its chips and associated control software into a broad range of third party ARM/DSP based processors including those made by Freescale Semiconductor (MX series), Marvell (PXA series), NEC Electronics (MP series), Samsung Electronics (S3C24xx), and TI (OMAP).

CellGuide provided no pricing or availability details.

Will Google Be Destroyed By Open Source Search Engines?

Could open source kill the golden egg that laid Google? If Wikia has their way, it just might.

The Wikia project, started by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, seeks to the turn the process of building a search engine from a multimillion dollar project to one that could cost just hundreds or thousands of bucks. That's a game changer.

Here is a look at what Wikia hopes to accomplish:

The project, which was started by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, consists of four components, the indexing of the Web, developing a search engine application, an algorithm, and using people to help filter sites and rank results.

One of the most expensive components of a search engine is the effort needed to index the Web. Companies have to buy servers and software to crawl the Web looking at what's on every page, in order to create a comprehensive list of what's on the Web.

Well, how will Wikia be able to provide all this search engine technology and service -- especially crawling the Web -- for free? Open user participation, of course:

The cost of indexing the Web is one of the main hurdles to starting a search engine, and for-profit companies have raised the bar year after year by indexing the Web more and more often. It used to be catalogued once a week, or once a day. Now it's once an hour, or even more often. The high cost of running these crawls has become a competitive weapon.

Wikia believes its crawl of the Web will cost nearly nothing, because it's asking Internet users to help out by downloading Web crawling software from Grub, which will use their computers during idle time to crawl the Web, and send results back to Wikia for the index. So far a thousand people have downloaded the application, and Penchina is hoping for 100,000 or more. The goal is to post the entire index online, as well as regular updates, so anyone can use them.

If I have any skepticism about Wikia, it centers on this piece. I know that distributed computing and its white hot offspring grid computing are big IT trends (and that they can work), but crawling the Web is the competitive advantage that Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft use to maintain their market share. Will a mishmash of random crawls from across the Web really be an adequate substitute to a centralized effort? We'll have to wait and see.

As for Wikia itself, I think that even if the distributed Web crawling doesn't work as well as Google, just having that option available -- along with open and free search engine parts -- will be the catalyst that both vertical search and the local search advocates have been looking for.

In May I predicted that Google would probably die not from direct competition with a new, direct rival but from competition from an army of tiny, but by the challenge posed by thousands specialty search engines and Web apps.

We've seen Technorati and Blinkx beat Google at its newer search initiatives. How many more little search engines will we see once Wikia goes live?

It’s August.. time for a “people can’t read a map” story

This is actually quite funny, maybe I have discovered a method of telling the time of year from the stories in the press.
This time last year, I was sitting in the studio’s of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, about to do a piece about how terrible Satellite Navigation was, and how PND’s are a threat to the continued existence of western civilisation.
Sitting next to John Humphrys is a bit scary, but he is actually a nice chap, anyway the nation was saved my defence of SatNav by the “Map Supporter” of the debate, the editor of Walking Magazine in the UK getting lost on the way to the Radio Studio !!
So this year we have this story in the Daily Mail, reporting on some research carried out by a car insurance company, which suggests people had difficulty recognising obscure map symbols on a OS Road Map.
So what is the concern here.. I doubt actually that people could ever recognise this symbols in the first place, PND’s and in-car SatNavs have not made people less map literate, they were never map literate in this way in the first place.
Most people use a map to plan routes, from place A to B not something you need and awareness of the fact that green shading represents mud!
Fewer people carrying maps in their cars, is a result not only on the increased use of satellite navigation, but also the use of online route planning tools like Google maps, which are often more up to date that road atlases. People also no longer carry extensive tool kits and spare parts in their cars as they would have once done.
We must remember that SatNavs are not perfect, but in almost all cases, contain the same information as road atlases, but presented in a more useable way and with the massive advantage of knowing where you are !!.
Congratulations to the insurance company for recognising the opportunity of the August quite time for the news, they won’t be getting my custom I’m afraid, but lets look forward to next Augusts story.

Rugged UMPC boasts GPS/GSM/GPRS options

Aug. 06, 2007Acturion Datasys has released an ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) intended for use outdoors "in harsh environmental conditions." The Victum-Tablet 8 UMPC has a "completely sealed" light-alloy metal housing and uses a 1.2 GHz Pentium M processor to run Windows XP Tablet Edition.

Additionally, the device's wide operating temperature range (-20 to +60 degrees C) can be extended at the low end by installation of an optional hard disk heater.

So that use via gloved hands is possible, the tablet can be operated either by finger pressure or via an active digitizer pen; the mode is switch-selectable. Ease of operation is said to be further enhanced by dedicated cursor and number keys.

Alternatively, a lighter "slim-pack" 3600mAh battery can power the UMPC for approximately 3.5 hours. The housing complies with the IP 54 (NEMA 12) MIL-STD 810-F standards for ruggedness.Other specifications include:

Single-chip GPS receiver gains Windows CE support

Aug. 07, 2007u-Nav Microelectronics has introduced software aimed at easing the task of designing its GPS controllers into Windows CE-based devices. The "Install n Go" application run on devices with ARM-based embedded processors. (Click for larger image of u-Nav's single-chip GPS receiver)u-Nav says its Install n Go application initializes the company's uN3010 single-chip GPS receiver (depicted above), manages associated Orion 2.1 navigation software, and provides a standard NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) interface for Windows mapping software through an integrated virtual serial communication port. It's said to utilize standard Windows CE drivers for serial communication to the GPS IC and control lines to the GPS subsystem.u-Nav says the Orion navigation software provides support for 2G receiver dynamics, and has been optimized for navigation and ground track performance under harsh urban canyon conditions. The company lists the following key features and specifications for the uN3010 single-chip GPS receiver:
