Google Nuclear Maps


I've started to see Google Maps being used to highlight locations of nuclear power plants. News, historical and potential disasters are all illustrated using Google Maps in these examples:

Tagzania has some interesting maps of the Ukrainian city of Chernobyl which on April 26th marked the 20 year anniversary since a major radioactive fallout occurred there. Google Maps shows the exact location of the reactor n. 4, with the Sarcophagus over it. There is also a disturbing overview of Pripyat, the phantom city abandoned after the accident.
Tagzania editor Luistxo has this to say about the ghosttown you can now explore using the satellite imagery of Google Maps: "Void of people, the hood now surrounds the buildings. Strange, isn't it?"



Over at the citizen journalist site LastingNews (.com) many nuclear themed maps have been created. The most interesting is a map which shows 19 significant global nuclear accidents that have occurred over the years. They have also plotted the location of the Siberian nuclear center of Angarsk (Russia) and the location of the Iranian Bushehr power plant construction site.

Shifting from nuclear power to nuclear weapons, this last Google Nuclear Map is a tool which shows, using Google Maps, what the the idealized blast damage from any high-yield explosion. The tool allows you to choose various US cities or lat/long to center the blast. Set the number of KT's and see what area a high-yield detonation would spread over.

Just to clarify, that last map hack (HYDEsim) shows the idealized blast damage from any high-yield explosion, and NOT the fallout from a nuclear detonation. Of course most detonations in that range are nuclear, but I've used it to map the blast damage from the recent oil facility explosion in the UK and the Halifax explosion of 1917, neither of which were nuclear. Also the Tunguska Event of 1908, though that's a really boring plot.

The venerable pastors of the church of Google pastors propagate “you need not do evil to make money” and want people to believe in it because they have written a letter and put it onto a web site that says so and the web site has a Google logo to it. Maybe we should try that too and see an increase in our market capitalization – of course we are doing no evil in our business. (However some churches may argue that all businesses are evil, but we will ignore that assessment).


I don’t think this argument is going to help in the long run to make money because in a lot of culture what they are doing may actually be evil. Certainly opening mail and reading it is one of them, digitizing library is another one of them, eavesdropping is another one of them, selling shares for profit is another one, and not accepting that all this is evil is another.



Google according to me has a plan which is similar to what Yahoo used to have and what Sun used to have (Think Network is the computer) and neither of them went on to become the no. 1 company. Google is not competing in Microsoft space they are competing in Sun & Yahoo space and more importantly they are trying dominance in an industry where loyalty is not there or extremely transient. Let me put up a case why



They have a search engine which is good, but a few years back Yahoo used to have such an engine and I cannot be sure that tomorrow they would have the best search engine. In fact what is interesting here is that the current assumption is that search engine is the center of the internet, it may be today, it may not be tomorrow. I am sure some PhD somewhere in the world is figuring out another “best” way to organize content on the internet without a search engine, and the vulture capitalists are waiting to bankroll his venture. For example if I use web to find out which is the best restaurant to eat in Seattle I do a search which says “best place to eat in Seattle” I get a result, and if I am aunt Hilda I would click the first one, unfortunately this first result does not have Mexican as one of the food category, so I change this to “best place to eat Mexican in Seattle” and I get another answer. So web is not the best way to go looking for the answer, I would call my Mexican friend and ask him, and it would be faster. Maybe I will use VoIP messenger though he is in a business where he does not have to use a computer.
They have an IM client, Yahoo has one, MSN has one, AOL has one, ICQ has one, Rediff in India has one, some mom and pop website also have one. AOL was hugely successful and it is no longer, and nobody really knows which one is the most popular today. Yahoo has a radio which no one else has, and I listen to that, and I “trained” my wife to use it, but she discovered MSN Radio and is hooked to that according to her what Google talk lacks is a radio. Go figure.
Google Talk has a VoIP, Yahoo has VoIP, MSN Messenger has VoIP I hear that telecom companies have VoIP, and still telcos are selling more cellphones in US, China & India and they are becoming ubiquitous with rising revenues for telcos, and they are not doing VoIP.
They have a sidebar, I believe Yahoo has a sidebar in their messenger, those low hanging tabs where you can set news, weather, stock etc., if you look closer MSN Messenger also has one. Now for the techies and aesthetically minded people these things don’t count as these messenger guys don’t call it a sidebar and does not have a Google logo. Does not mean that all moms, dads, Harry and Tom would start installing sidebar because Google has made it. They have seen this before and they are not fascinated by it. They don’t need it, in the same way that I don’t have rings in my eyebrows.
Google has Froogle, Earth, Catalogs, Answers – I am not sure how many people use it and still not sure how many people would like to use it. I remember having a conversation with the marketing head of a local telco on what is the market size of location based services and his answer was he would have to put his hand out of the window to grab a number, till date they haven’t launched a LBS, though a simple service like ringtone download is the biggest Value Added Service for the telco.
Google has a library project which everybody thinks is devil incarnate, but I am surprised people think so, Google has written on the web site that business do not need to do evil to make money. Something is wrong somewhere. If people wanted to read books they would go to the library, read Fortune magazine where they explain Americans are not reading, and here is Google trying to digitize books in the American libraries, maybe they should try Indian or Chinese library.
Google wants Machine Translation of all the languages in the world – I am sure that’s a good thing, but I would like to believe aunt Hilda is not interested in knowing what Chinese papers printed as headline (in their language), heck she wouldn’t even be interested in knowing what USA Today published as headline.


So if I take this assumption that not all of 8 billion inhabitants of planet called earth are falling over themselves to go to Google to search the web and learn Chinese then at some point reality will catch up and Google’s P/E would return to a healthy 31, like all of the companies that don’t do evil in business. Till such time there would be a lot of products from Google that I don’t need (Like iPOD, SEGWAY, Playstation).

Trimble Is Navigating In The Right Direction (TRMB)

Ashish Kelkar submits: Trimble Navigation (TRMB) ($47.7) is a Silicon Valley company that will reward its investors richly. A savvy investor friend of mine once said to me ““If my wife knows the company then I don’’t invest in it”” meaning he likes companies that are not closely watched or followed by the main stream.

All of us have heard of GPS (Global positioning system); related companies that come to mind are Garmin (GRMN) and Magellan (a division of the french conglomerate Thales) that sell GPS devices and car navigation systems. A name not so often heard is Sunnyvale, California based Trimble Navigation Limited (TRMB).

Trimble provides advanced positioning product solutions. The applications served include surveying, agriculture, machine guidance, asset and fleet management and telecom infrastructure. Trimble products often combine location with a wireless link to provide specific solutions to specific applications. The company also develops software algorithms and embedded firmware that can process the location information for further value added functionality. The company has five key segments it operates in:

Engineering & Construction -– the company has a JV with Caterpillar (CAT).
Field Solutions -– Mainly used in farm equipment and surveying and leveling operations, operates a JV with Nikon.
Component Technologies -– licensing technology to mobile carriers, telecom operators and in vehicle navigation systems.
Mobile Solutions -– mainly used in fleet management systems.
Portfolio Technologies -– this is a tiny segment that goes to service the military and defense segments.
Trimble seems richly valued with current ratios of :

What then makes “Trimble Navigation” a growth story? Two key factors that we believe make this a growth story are as follows:

Strong macroeconomic demand for construction and mining equipment worldwide partly due to the commodity boom and construction activity in China and other emerging markets bodes well for the company, Trimble has strategic alliances with two of the biggest players Caterpillar (CAT) and CNH Global (CNH).

Trimble software makes GPS available on Sprint-Nextel (S) phones today. The software business is a high margin segment and should do well as location based services start becoming a staple of mobile and web usage using Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, EVDO or GPRS / W-CDMA technologies.
While we don’’t think this is a super high growth story, the company should deliver growth and returns outperforming the market.

The company derives a lot of its revenues from construction and mining and this is a highly cyclical industry, but as said above the current long term trend is favorable. In the short term Q2 is traditionally a strong quarter. So we should expect to see good growth this quarter. The company has a strong balance sheet about $75M in cash, and it carries a small debt load of $0.65 M. A key indicator of business Cash flow from operations increased to $93M in 2005 from $74M in 2004 and $30M in 2003.

Overall we believe Trimble Navigation is moving in the right direction, although we would like to see the company get more agressive in the defense and military applications.

Ituran Receives First Chinese Order of End User Location Devices

Cisco Systems is collaborating with Swedish software provider Appear Networks to deliver an Integrated Location Services Solution for the Stockholm Subway. The platform will use a wi-fi network to deliver personalised, real-time information to users in underground stations. Based on contextual information such as time of day, job role and current physical location, the solution is able to access the right information, which is interpreted and pushed out in real time to the right users. The solution is also able to determine the location of a handheld mobile device to within a few metres. A field trial is also currently underway with Stockholm's Kista Galleria shopping mall.
Geographically Encoded Objects for RSS feeds

This site describes a number of ways to encode location in RSS feeds. As RSS becomes more and more prevalent as a way to publish and share information, it becomes increasingly important that location is described in an interoperable manner so that applications can request, aggregate, share and map geographically tagged feeds.

To avoid the fragmentation of language that has occured in RSS and other Web information encoding efforts, we have created this site to promote a relatively small number of encodings that meet the needs of a wide range of communities. By building these encodings on a common information model, we hope to promote interoperability and "upwards-compatibility" across encodings.

At this point we have completed work on two encodings which we are calling GeoRSS GML and GeoRSS Simple. GeoRSS GML is a formal GML Application Profile, and supports a greater range of features than Simple, notably coordinate reference systems other than WGS84 latitude/longitude. It is designed for use with Atom 1.0, RSS 2.0 and RSS 1.0, although it can be used just as easily in non-RSS XML encodings. GeoRSS Simple has greater brevity, but also has limited extensibility. It can be used in all the same ways and places as GeoRSS GML.

Opera Release Opera Mobile 8.6 Web Browser for Series 60

Opera Software has announced Opera Mobile 8.60, its mobile browser for Symbian Series 60 (S60) mobile phones, based on Symbian OS.

With this new release, Opera is offering its most complete mobile browser to date. Opera Mobile 8.60 for S60 is designed to let users interact more effectively with the Web on their phone, and includes new features to speed up the user interaction through auto-completion of Web addresses and passwords, page toggling and smooth scrolling.

Opera Mobile 8.60 for S60 is designed for the new Symbian 9, S60 3rd Edition phones, featured on handsets such as the Nokia 3250, N91, N80, N71, E60, E61 and E71. It also supports all current Symbian S60 2nd Edition mobile devices.

Users can surf with Opera's Small-Screen Rendering (SSR) technology, which refits Web pages to the width of the mobile screen, or select desktop mode to view the page to look like it would on a PC, with the ability to zoom in and out.

The software introduces an updated user interface with new skin, and allows users to open and toggle up to four windows, each with separate settings for zoom levels and display options.

Users can also read RSS feeds and bookmark/subscribe to these. Images can be save to the phone gallery, or sent as MMS.

First 'Super 3G' phones coming July?

BenQ Mobile has brought forward the release of its first mobile phone to support the HSDPA data speed boosting extension to 3G technology. According to online reports, BenQ's EF91 will ship in Europe in July courtesy of a deal struck with T-Mobile.

The claim comes via "market sources" cited by DigiTimes. How much earlier the phone is coming is open to question: the report points to an original launch date in Q4, but at the EF91's announcement in February, BenQ said the phone would ship in the "summer".

In addition to HSDPA, EF91 sports a 2in, 240 x 320, 262,144-colour screen to show downloaded content at is best, 3D surround sound to enhance audio playback and is fitted with a Micro SD slot for media storage. BenQ didn't say much else about the phone's specifications, but Bluetooth is certainly in the mix. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera.

The report also claims HTC will ship its 'Muse' HSDPA handset in Q3, initially under the Qtek brand as the S300. HTC said in November 2005, its HSDPA handsets would ship in H2 2006, with the specific launch window presumably dependent on carriers launching commercial HSDPA services. That's expected to happen sooner rather than later, so a Q3 release seems reasonable.

HTC has a second HSDPA device in the works, codenamed 'Breeze'. Last year, it was claimed the candybar Breeze offers a 320 x 240 display, 1.3 megapixel camera, 64MB of RAM and 128MB of Flash. Muse is said to have 4GB of Flash and integrated stereo speakers - it's essentially HTC's bid for iPod market share. It also has an FM radio, 240 x 240 display and a 2.1 megapixel camera, according to online reports. ®

Location Based Photo Stream in Times Square

This is a perfect example of the fact that we still don’t quite get mobile technology here in the good ‘ol USA. This application, which allows you to submit your images to have them displayed on a giant electronic bulletin board in Times Square is quite cool; yet simply by changing the application or the interface to the application in one of a couple ways, it could have been made not only much, much cooler, but also far more timely and far more relevant.

How? Well for starters, to even view the site you have to have Flash 8. The means no mobile device on the planet can view the site. Why not use an iteration of the software that is compliant with the Flash Lite requirements? You can still stream the images. Still, it seems that if the developers of this application cared about mobile at all they’d have some alternate means of viewing the site instead of leaving you locked up at the “You need Flash 8″ page. How about revolving JPEG images from the stream instead of the live camera? That would still be cool.

This isn’t even the big thing they missed though. It’s that most of people’s “big moments” don’t happen conviently by a PC or coveniently near a digital camera. Mostly , you’ve got a camera phone to capture those special memories. This is what makes an application like Shozu and Flickr so cool - they’re there when you need them.

So why doesn’t “Life Comes At You Fast dot Com” incorporate images uploaded via Shozu? I have no idea. I’ve never spoken with their developers, or seen their technology beyond that which I checked out this morning on FireFox. However, it seems clear that they’re missing a really big opportunity and all because they don’t pay attention to the conventions for developing for the third screen AND because they haven’t thought ahead enough about where people are likely to be when the most important moments of their lives occur.

Perhaps if the developers of LCAYF.com thought this through more carefully they’d get on the horn to the Shozu guys right away. After all , how hard could it be to post pictures to them instead of Flickr? Or Even in Conjunction WITH Flickr? Anyone from Shozu or Flickr care to enlighten us? Or more importantly the guys at LCAYF.com? I’m sure they’d be interested to hear what you have to say.

LCAYF.com looks like an ideal “Other Destination” (as we call them) for ShoZu, except that the only way to upload photos appears to be via a web form (after filling in lots of personal details). If they accepted uploads via email then ShoZu support would come for free.

Phone2Gearth for S60 is a clever application enabling S60 (and S80)device users to use their favorite smartphone along with a bluetooth enabled GPS and enjoy the results using the popular Google Earth viewing client.

Here'es the premise... Phone2Gearth from Real Track Mobile is an easy Nokia Series 60 GPS aplication that allows to log tracks which are directly saved as Google Earth KML files - Note: KML is the proprietary data format that is read by the Google Earth client.

A simple, 4 step process is all it takes:

Enable/Set GPS Bluetooth
Click "Start" to begin capturing your GPS log
Export (via Bluetooth or file) to KML format
Import and view your log within Google Earth
For a sample, a blogger at "Digital Geography" has used the app and enjoyed the benefits to record some favorite placemarks. Imagine the next time you travel, you record locations and set placemarks at all your favorite places. Then you associate an image/photo with each place and you share with usings using the free Google Earth client.

I'm here with my company at DEMO
and this morning - after a few days of last minute rush - we launched our suite of Location Based Services, including my baby called "WaveBlog." Yay! What a push. And whew! Now I can talk about what I'm doing!
This is what I've been working on for the past several months. It's a combination of a custom J2ME based mapping client, weblog service and location alerting system. It's being sold to carriers, not to the general public, but you can play with the public weblog site above. This is the piece I developed. It still needs a lot of hardening and ever more features need to be added to keep up with the TypePads of the world, but in general it's your standard weblog service, but with the integration of location information and maps.

The location information is the hard part, and the piece of the puzzle my company fills in. First, you can use the J2ME app to locate a position on a map with crosshairs for a one-click post to your weblog, or in the coming months we're going to be announcing deals with American and international carriers who will provide the location information on the back end which will geo-tag email and web posts automagically. I've also added a geo-encoding form to the site as well, so at the worst case you can just enter the address information and it'll look up the location info for you.

In addition to the maps on the weblog, the RSS feed also incorporates per-post geolocation using the W3C geo proposed namespace and tags. The idea is to provide that data for others to use and to start aggregating other geotagged feeds so that using a handset - via J2ME or WAP2 - you can see which weblogs have been updated in real time near you or in another specific location ("location-based mobile aggregation"). Our pitch has to do with club-goers and other trendy what-if scenarios that carriers love, but in general it's just the next step in mobile weblogging. Going from "photo blogs" to *real* moblogging, by enabling producing and consuming of information organized not only by time, but also by location. When you combine this with the rich media that modern handsets can produce, people become "personal broadcasters" where every mobile user (everyone?) becomes a roving reporter on the scene around them.

Now this is just the weblogging piece. The company existed long before I got there - they've got this really intense Alert system (the third product in the suite) which is not just a product, but a platform. Carriers buy our server and can then enable any of their third party developers to add location based alerts to their products (we'll be using the Alert system ourselves in the "WaveBlog"). For example, Buddy Alert allows you and your friends to sign up for alerts if you come within a certain distance of each other: "Alert: Ana is within 1 kilometer of you. Call her?" or things like Child Tracker: "Alert: Alex just decided to leave town with your car. Call him?" (This example will obviously not be for a few years, but the tech exists today.)

And that's the launch. Whew! We're pretty exhausted already and it's only day one. Luckily we got to present (not me, my CEO) early on Day One, so now we can just hang out in the Pavillion and answer questions. I got a great visit from Dave Sifry and Doc Searls this morning (who brought along an AP reporter with them. THANKS GUYS!). Doc is going to come back and pick my brain on the Linux systems we're using. I haven't mentioned that yet, but I'm the only developer who uses Windows. Everyone else uses Linux on their desktops, which is very cool, and WaveBlog (of course) runs on Linux (Debian, actually). Wonder why I like my job so much?

NAVTEQ brings Traffic Service to Magellan RoadMate 700 and 760

Magellan and NAVTEQ have teamed up to bring traffic capabilities to the masses as they announced today that the Magellan RoadMate 760 and 700 portable vehicle navigation solutions are the first to offer NAVTEQ real-time traffic services via NAVTEQ Traffic RDS (Radio Data System). In addition, all Magellan vehicle navigation solutions introduced in 2006 will provide real-time traffic solutions, even entry-level devices, and will provide the one of the most cost-effective real-time traffic solutions on the market.
The subscription-based traffic service is available immediately for the Magellan RoadMate 760 through the purchase of the Magellan TrafficKit(TM) at the Magellan website or from select retailers. The TrafficKit is also compatible with the Magellan RoadMate 700 when customers obtain a software upgrade from the Magellan website.

"We selected NAVTEQ Traffic RDS because of the reliable data it will deliver to our customers," said Christian Bubenheim, general manager of Thales' consumer business. "Integrating NAVTEQ real-time traffic

Magellan traffic solutions continuously and wirelessly transmit, via FM frequencies, comprehensive NAVTEQ data from multiple sources across the nation, including commercial traffic data, government departments of transportation, police and emergency services, road sensors, cameras and airborne reports.

"Working together to offer NAVTEQ Traffic RDS to the Magellan RoadMate devices enables us to provide reliable traffic information to an extended customer base and driving audience," commented Winston Guillory, Senior Vice President - Consumer and Business Sales, NAVTEQ. "NAVTEQ is committed to responding to the needs of its customers, and we are thrilled that Magellan has selected NAVTEQ to deliver traffic information via RDS broadcasting."

The Magellan TrafficKit receiver processes the real-time traffic information and displays icons on the Magellan RoadMate map screen to show traffic jams and conditions that impede the normal flow of traffic, such as lane reductions, road construction and accidents. Drivers can choose whether they see all or specific types of incidents, and can learn details about each by touching the associated icon on the screen. Drivers can also receive traffic alerts for informational purposes only, without being rerouted.

The Magellan TrafficKit for the Magellan RoadMate 760 sells for $149, which includes 15 months of traffic service. The TrafficKit for the Magellan RoadMate 800 and 3000T will be available in June for US $149, which includes 15 months of service. Available in May, the Magellan RoadMate 860T will include the TrafficKit and 15 months of service for US $799. The Magellan RoadMate 3050T will ship in June with the TrafficKit included along with three months of service for US $649. Available in July, the Magellan RoadMate 6000T will feature an integrated traffic receiver and will include three months of service for $699.99.

GeoVector has been issued a patent for one of their innovative location based services. Their software allows you to point your cellphone at a location and then retrieve information about that location. The device uses GPS to determine your location and a digital compass in the device to determine what direction you are “pointing”.

The service has already been deployed in Japan through a service called Mapion Local Search which we have talked about before.


“When GeoVector and its partners launched the world’s first pointing-based local search service, we revolutionized the way people use a wireless phone to interact with the world around them,” said Peter Ellenby, GeoVector’s Director of New Media.

The company says they are currently in talks with carriers in the US and around the world to further deploy their solutions.
Microsoft Releases MapPoint 2006 Mapping Solution for Businesses and Mobile Information Workers

What's New in S60 3rd Edition - the Landmark APIs
A landmark is a representation of a geographical location and thus landmarks, or Points-Of-Interests (POIs) as they are also known, are an integral part of almost any location-aware application. The new landmark functionality in S60 3rd Edition enables applications that allow end users to create landmarks for their favorite places, send landmarks to their friends, navigate to a landmark, and of course to manage their collection of landmarks.
S60 3rd Edition includes a dedicated application for the centralized management of user landmarks. Thus it is not necessary for the application developers to put their effort in constructing such a system. Instead, developers are free to concentrate on how they would like to use landmarks in their own applications.
As you can observe from the preliminary screenshots, the user can access landmarks either directly or hierarchicly via categories.
To learn how to take advantage of landmarks in your application, please have a look at the Landmarks API, the Landmarks Search API, the Landmarks Database Management API, and the related example application source code. JSR-179 can be used to access landmarks from Java MIDlets.
See also the Landmarks Exchange Format Specification for details about how the landmarks can be represented in XML format and as such exchanged between mobile devices (through local connectivity) or between content providers and their mobile users (for example, through Web sites).
What's New in S60 3rd Edition - the Landmarks UI Add/Edit Component API
If your application creates new landmarks, it is likely that your application will need to prompt the end user for some additional information about the landmark, for example, how he or she would like to name or categorize the landmark. This usage scenario is likely to be so common that we included a ready-made UI component in S60 3rd Edition to do just that. The component also does the coordinate acquisition via the Location API.
You can also use the component in view only mode if you wish to show the details of a certain landmark to the end user and want to avoid the possibility of the end user modifying the landmark in any way. To learn more about this ready-made UI component, please have a look at the Landmarks UI Add/Edit API and the source code of the related example application in the S60 3rd Edition SDK.
What's New in S60 3rd Edition - the Landmarks UI Selector Component API
Many times your application will need the end user to indicate one or more landmarks for you, for example, for your application to show the indicated landmark(s) on a map or provide navigation guidance to them. To help you with that, S60 3rd Edition includes a ready-made UI component that you can use to prompt the end user for one or more landmarks or for one or more landmark categories.
Simply launch the UI component and you will get the landmarks or categories selected by the end user as return values. The UI component takes care of all the required end-user interaction. For more details, please see the Landmarks UI Selector API and the source code of the related example application.
What's New in S60 3rd Edition - the GPS Satellite View
Every decent location-aware application has a GPS satellite view, right? Now wouldn't it be a drag if every developer would need to make their own satellite view? And wouldn't it be a pain for end users to try to cope with different-looking views that are supposed to depict the same thing, the availability of the GPS satellites?
To answer these questions, S60 3rd Edition offers developers a ready-made UI component that applications can use to display GPS satellite availability in a clear and coherent way. To learn how easy it is to embed the satellite view into your application, please have a look at the Satellite Info API and the source code of the related example application.
Make Your Application Location-Aware - Now and with Ease
The Location Acquisition API 2nd 3rd enables native Symbian OS applications to determine the current location of the handset. This API provides easy access for determining a user's current location, independent of the positioning technology being used. This means that applications can utilize all available positioning technologies, such as Bluetooth Global Positioning System (GPS) accessories and network-based positioning, via a single API.
To make your mobile application location-aware, more information is available in the Location Acquisition API and the source code of the related example applications.
Testing Made Easy
Developing location-aware software can be tedious if you need to transfer your application to a mobile device and start walking or driving around to test the effects of your latest changes. To overcome this problem, the S60 platform allows you to create a text file from which the positioning system will fetch coordinates, thus simulating the device moving along the given path.
First prepare a simulation data file. For details, please take a look at the Simulation PSY User Guide.
Then tell the positioning system the location of your simulation data file. In S60 releases prior to 3rd Edition, this happens with a separate SimPsyConfigurator application that is available in the application grid.
Starting from S60 3rd Edition, you can set the simulation data file from the settings of the Simulation positioning method.
Also make sure that the Simulation positioning method is the selected positioning method when testing. You can check and alter this setting using the Location Settings application.

Handset Support for Network-Resident LBS
Starting from S60 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 1, MT-LR Privacy messages from network-resident LBS applications are supported. MT-LR is an acronym for Mobile Terminated Location Request and is also known as LCS Location Notification. These messages let the device owner decide if a network-resident LBS application, such as a weather service, may use the device’s location to provide the service requested by the device owner. For more information on the role of LCS Location Notification in Location Services, please refer to 3GPP TS 23.271 (or 03.71). For signalling protocol level information of LCS-LocationNotification, please refer to 3GPP TS 24.030 (or 04.30)."

The new landmark functionality in S60 3rd Edition enables applications that allow end users to create landmarks for their favorite places, send landmarks to their friends, navigate to a landmark, and of course to manage their collection of landmarks.
S60 3rd Edition includes a dedicated application for the centralized management of user landmarks. Thus it is not necessary for the application developers to put their effort in constructing such a system. Instead, developers are free to concentrate on how they would like to use landmarks in their own applications.
As you can observe from the preliminary screenshots, the user can access landmarks either directly or hierarchicly via categories.
To learn how to take advantage of landmarks in your application, please have a look at the Landmarks API, the Landmarks Search API, the Landmarks Database Management API, and the related example application source code. JSR-179 can be used to access landmarks from Java MIDlets.

What's New in S60 3rd Edition - the Landmarks UI Add/Edit Component API
If your application creates new landmarks, it is likely that your application will need to prompt the end user for some additional information about the landmark, for example, how he or she would like to name or categorize the landmark. This usage scenario is likely to be so common that we included a ready-made UI component in S60 3rd Edition to do just that. The component also does the coordinate acquisition via the Location API.
You can also use the component in view only mode if you wish to show the details of a certain landmark to the end user and want to avoid the possibility of the end user modifying the landmark in any way. What's New in S60 3rd Edition - the Landmarks UI Selector Component API
Many times your application will need the end user to indicate one or more landmarks for you, for example, for your application to show the indicated landmark(s) on a map or provide navigation guidance to them. To help you with that, S60 3rd Edition includes a ready-made UI component that you can use to prompt the end user for one or more landmarks or for one or more landmark categories.
Simply launch the UI component and you will get the landmarks or categories selected by the end user as return values. The UI component takes care of all the required end-user interaction. What's New in S60 3rd Edition - the GPS Satellite View
Every decent location-aware application has a GPS satellite view, right? Now wouldn't it be a drag if every developer would need to make their own satellite view? And wouldn't it be a pain for end users to try to cope with different-looking views that are supposed to depict the same thing, the availability of the GPS satellites?
To answer these questions, S60 3rd Edition offers developers a ready-made UI component that applications can use to display GPS satellite availability in a clear and coherent way. Make Your Application Location-Aware - Now and with Ease
The Location Acquisition API 2nd 3rd enables native Symbian OS applications to determine the current location of the handset. This API provides easy access for determining a user's current location, independent of the positioning technology being used. This means that applications can utilize all available positioning technologies, such as Bluetooth Global Positioning System (GPS) accessories and network-based positioning, via a single API.

Testing Made Easy
Developing location-aware software can be tedious if you need to transfer your application to a mobile device and start walking or driving around to test the effects of your latest changes. To overcome this problem, the S60 platform allows you to create a text file from which the positioning system will fetch coordinates, thus simulating the device moving along the given path.
First prepare a simulation data file. For details, please take a look at the Simulation PSY User Guide.
Then tell the positioning system the location of your simulation data file. In S60 releases prior to 3rd Edition, this happens with a separate SimPsyConfigurator application that is available in the application grid.
Starting from S60 3rd Edition, you can set the simulation data file from the settings of the Simulation positioning method.
Also make sure that the Simulation positioning method is the selected positioning method when testing. You can check and alter this setting using the Location Settings application.

Handset Support for Network-Resident LBS
Starting from S60 2nd Edition, Feature Pack 1, MT-LR Privacy messages from network-resident LBS applications are supported. MT-LR is an acronym for Mobile Terminated Location Request and is also known as LCS Location Notification. These messages let the device owner decide if a network-resident LBS application, such as a weather service, may use the device’s location to provide the service requested by the device owner. For more information on the role of LCS Location Notification in Location Services, please refer to 3GPP TS 23.271 (or 03.71). For signalling protocol level information of LCS-LocationNotification, please refer to 3GPP TS 24.030 (or 04.30)."
