LBS BBC's director of future media, Ashley Highfield is excited about the mobile screen and about LBS.

Highfield is already considering the possibilities of adding location tags to programmes such as Springwatch, so those viewing content via a mobile could access extra information. "You could say 'show me all sightings of the greater spotted plover within five miles of where I am now'," he said. Viewers could also use their mobile to give more detailed responses to broadcasters, such as visiting the BBC website to add a location tag if they see a particular bird themselves.

Geo-tagging likely to feature in news stories in the future

The BBC has been trialling a citizen journalist reporting project where stories have been tagged using GPS technology in mobile phones. Now the first results have been revealed.

The stories play as multimedia slideshows synchronised with Google Maps presentations. The first geo-tagging stories went live this week.

The stories have been produced through a collaboration between the BBC, the University of Brighton , Nokia and mobile marketing firm Ymogen .

The project aimed to explore how text, images and video, combined with location and time, can create 'crowd pulling stories'. The first results can be seen at Geo-Stories .

Those taking part in the project were equipped with a Nokia N-series phone, and a Garmin GPS device. The aim was to explore a kind of storytelling fixed to geographical locations.

The mobile and satnav devices captured geographical data as well as still images, audio and video.

BBC said it was likely that geo-tagging, adding location-based data, was likely to feature in news stories in the future. Mobile phones such as the Nokia N95 has GPS technology built-in enabling reporters to automatically include location details in their stories.

3D city maps of 50 European cities ready in July

Tele Atlas recently announced that it will make available nearly 50 detailed 3D city maps for use in navigation devices and location-based applications. The first Tele Atlas 3D city maps will be released in July 2007, including maps for major European cities such as Berlin, London and Rome. More European, U.S. and Asian cities are scheduled to be released in 2008.

In addition to 3D mapping, they will also texturize most of the city centers, adding landmarks and other notable structures making it even easier for visitors and tourists to orient themselves.

TeleAtlas‘ 3D city maps complements their currently available 3D product which includes 1,000 landmarks in 30 European cities. The first GPS navigation system to use TeleAtlas’ new 3D landmarks will be Pioneer’s recently launched AVIC-HD3BT. This system includes 518 European landmarks in 21 cities. Tele Atlas also plans to launch more than 1,000 3D landmarks for the U.S. in more than 30 major cities in 2007.

PARIS (Reuters) - Three-dimensional views of city streets and warnings of dangerous turns ahead will feature on the next generation of satellite navigation systems, the chief executive of digital map supplier Tele Atlas (TA.AS: Quote, Profile, Research said.

Once only an expensive option for luxury cars, navigation systems have surged in popularity in recent years and the technology is now making the jump into mobile phones.

Pedestrians will soon use such systems to find out whether to take a cab or the subway, and when the next bus or train is set to leave the station, Alain De Taeye told the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in Paris on Wednesday.

Tele Atlas is already gathering relevant data through vehicles it uses for mapping. Equipped with six cameras, they capture both a road and its surroundings.

"You end up with a video database of the whole world the way it is in 3D," De Taeye said.

"The technology is fully developed ... and we're launching 50 cities in Europe this year. If you take a cab in Japan you already see it live on the in-car navigation system."

Tele Atlas is also extending its maps to incorporate public transport options such as buses and subways as well as data on pedestrian shortcuts that cars cannot take.

"If you combine it with traffic data, you can calculate whether you should take your own car, a cab, or the metro," De Taeye said, adding the company had such a prototype system for Paris. Continued...

There is a campaign that Mastercard runs in the UK and maybe elsewhere comparing the value of goods and services with the value of Mastercard, of course the value of Mastercard is always priceless ! Well is appears over the past couple of months and with the latest announcement from Motorola picked up by All Points Blog, The price of maps on a phone is zero.

I have two mobile devices I carry around with me, my N95 and a Blackberry both of which have manufacturer installed mapping applications which offer extensive street level mapping data free of charge.. in the case of the N95 I can even download offline a global mapping dataset to store on my 2GB storage card so that I won’t incur the stupid data rates imposed by the network operators in the UK

Of course if you don’t have a new Nokia, Motorola or Blackberry you can download Google Maps for Mobile which delivers the same Google maps experience of the desktop on any mobile device which can run Java.

I remember as a data supplier we had such high hopes of the mobile market and LBS taking off as a major revenue stream, it still is a potentially a major stream, but it is certainly not going to be the gold mine it was hoped to be with individual transaction based billing of consumers. That was always going to be too costly and complex to build a business model around, at best a subscription model as used for some of the navigation applications might be sustainable.. but time will tell.

I like Google Maps, because they provide a lot of context around the location that I’m searching. With the amount of travel that I do, it’s always nice to know what’s near the hotel — particularly restaurants, hotels, and shopping.

I’m setting up a new CiviCRM web site, and it has the feature of asking about the longitude and latitude of locations (e.g. home address) when filling in the user profile. It’s easy enough to find the place using Google Maps, but decoding the URL is pretty tricky.

In an entry on Google Maps Help Group, someone asking that exact question got a response:

When I do a search, I’d like to get the latitude and longitude results for the location I’m searching. How do I do this?

Computer scientists are hoping to add GPS satellite navigation technology to hand-held music devices like MP3s, to help guide pedestrians around cities.

Walkers could programme a destination into a device and be directed there while listening to songs.

If headed the right way, music would play from both headphones, but shifting volume to different ears could indicate a change in direction.

Swansea and Glasgow universities have had funding for the three-year project.

Researchers say the technology could be developed to allow users to personalise the system.

If they were in an unfamiliar town or city and had an interest in art galleries, the device could give them 'a nudge' to alert them one was nearby.

The system's prototype was developed by Dr Matt Jones, a senior lecturer at Swansea University's department of computer science, while he was working in New Zealand.

He has now had funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council to develop the idea further with colleagues in Scotland.

Dr Jones said: "Normally, when we listen to music through headphones, we do so to shut the world out. This system allows the world to seep in when users let it.

"We are particularly interested in redefining how people interact with computers, and how we can make computers more actively responsive to their needs.

"So we're looking at how we can use the music people are listening to in order to prompt them to take notice of things that might be of interest to them.

"For instance, if your handheld device knows that the user likes art galleries, it can give a 'nudge' when they're in the vicinity of a gallery."

He added: "The nudge would either be a physical tap or vibration from the device, or it could be given audibly by changing the balance of the music being listened to.

"If the user decides to follow the cues to see what the device thinks is of interest, the system will then guide them to the destination.

"And if users ignore the hints, the device will stop nudging, until it comes across something else of potential interest."

Market For Handheld Devices Continues To Shrink


Shipments plunged to 919,916 in the first quarter, compared to 1,549,199 the year before. IDC said the sharp downward trend in the market was accelerated by Dell's decision to leave the market.


The handheld device market is continuing its relentless slide as 36% fewer devices were shipped in the first quarter compared with the same quarter in the previous year, according to a report released Tuesday by IDC.

Shipments plunged to 919,916 in the 2007 quarter versus 1,549,199 the year before. The market research firm said the sharp downward trend in the market was accelerated by Dell's decision to leave the market.

"Dell's exit from the handheld device market underscores the market's decline," said Ramon Llamas, research analyst at IDC's Mobile Device Technology and Trends team, in a prepared statement. "The growing popularity of converged mobile devices combined with the declining prices for laptop computers have put tremendous pressure on the handheld device market."

According to the report, Palm remained the leader in the category, even as its shipments dropped from 475,000 to 295,250 in the first quarter. Palm retained its lead with 32% market share, ahead of Hewlett-Packard, whose 199,400 units shipped were second in the market.

The exception was Mio, which actually gained in shipments and market share, as its popular GPS- and PIM-outfitted handhelds fared well in the market. Mio's P350 and P550 propelled the firm to a 15% market share, up from 6.8% in the previous year's quarter. Mio shipped 138,000 units in the latest quarter.

Still, "the addition of multimedia and GPS features onto handheld devices did not stem their decline because standalone multimedia players and personal navigation devices grew in popularity," Llamas said.

Although Palm's shipments dropped, the company released new competitive models of its Treo, and IDC indicated Palm will introduce followups to its Palm Z22 and Palm TX devices. IDC also observed that HP has kept a healthy competitive position in the market by introducing several new products, including its 510 Voice Messenger, its first non-Qwerty converged mobile device.

Apple Gets FCC Approval For iPhone

The Federal Communications Commission clears the way for the highly anticipated launch next month.


Apple's iPhone received a passing grade on Thursday from the FCC, clearing the way for its highly anticipated debut next month.

Documents posted on the FCC Web site, show the phone has passed all the applicable tests for compliance with government regulations. In its description of the iPhone, the FCC calls it a "GSM cellular telephone with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi."

As reported at its announcement at the January Macworld keynote, the iPhone will initially be sold in the U.S. by AT&T, formerly Cingular Wireless. Because the phone is based on the GSM communications standard, it is expected to work in countries outside the United States.

Apple has said that it expects to begin selling the iPhone in June. The widespread expectation by analysts is that the launch will coincide with Apple's World Wide Developer Conference (WWCD) in San Francisco. CEO Steve Jobs is scheduled to deliver his keynote on Monday, June 11.

On Wednesday, iPhone watchers were alarmed by a report posted on tech blog Engadget suggesting that Apple would delay both the iPhone and its next-generation operating system codenamed Leopard until October. Both reports turned up to be hoaxes.

Apple's entry into the cellular phone market will place it in direct competition with smart-phone makers Research In Motion and Palm.

The iPhone, which is expected to include a touch screen and includes a music and video player, will also compete with phones running Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system.

The iPhone is expected to come in two versions with a starting cost of $500 without the accompanying phone contract from AT&T.


Samsung Develops 8-Gbyte Mobile Phone Memory Card

SD, or secure digital, memory cards, typically are used for data storage in digital still cameras. MicroSD cards, which are a quarter of the size, are backward compatible with SD cards using an extender. This allows multimedia files downloaded by mobile phones to be used in other media.

Samsung is aggressively pursuing the SD card market, as well as the competing MMC, or multimedia card, market. Market research firm Dataquest expects the memory card market as a whole to average 10% annual growth through 2010, Samsung said. Demand for high-density 8-Gbyte cards is expected to grow at an average of 2.6 times per year in the same time period. By 2010, the 8-Gbyte memory card, which has yet to be supported in phones, is expected to be the market mainstream in terms of units sold, Samsung said.

Nortel, Toshiba And WiMAX Firms Work On Interoperability

More than 30 wireless equipment companies in Spain this week are testing advanced signal processing technology for next-generation smart antennas.


In an early example of firms solving the nagging problem of WiMAX interoperability, Nortel and Toshiba Corp. reported Friday that they will offer mobile WiMAX base stations for Japanese and global markets.

Based on Nortel's next generation broadband wireless technology and Toshiba's amplifier and miniaturization technology, the base stations' radio module will be built by Toshiba.

WiMAX, the wide area wireless technology is being deployed globally, but most providers are still working to solve interoperability challenges. The WiMAX Forum this week convened 33 companies in a Mobile PlugFest in Spain as efforts to hammer out interoperability issues are being worked out across the world.

"As more and more companies enter the WiMAX space, we will continue to offer those companies a way to ensure that their products are interoperable and will provide their customers the best WiMAX experience possible," said Ron Resnick, president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum.

The gathering in Spain concludes Saturday, but non-disclosure agreements among the 33 participating firms all but rule out any immediate news of successful results by participants. WiMAX Forum officials said the event in Spain is the first that will test MIMO and a signal processing technology knows as beamforming for smart antennas.

Nortel and Toshiba have had a head start in developing the technology because they have been working closely on it for several months. The firms expect to roll out their base stations initially in Japan.

"As Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications works to standardize ultra-broadband wireless technologies for the domestic market," said Nick Vreugdenhil, president, Japan, Nortel, in a statement, "We will be ready to respond to the needs of the Japanese market and extend the benefits of this joint development alliance to other markets around the globe."

Nortel noted that it has worked on OFDM/MIMO (orthogonal frequency division modulation/ multiple-input multiple-output) for nearly a decade, conducting WiMAX trials in countries ranging from the U.S. and Australia to Taiwan and, Russia, the Dominican Republic, and other nations. Toshiba's wireless expertise has primarily been centered in Japan.

Traffic-induced Highway Hypnosis Stalls Unprepared Drivers

BMW Drivers Find the Open Road More Easily

WHY does a BMW driver need a map update? For BMW drivers who purchased their vehicle more than a year ago, the map that powers the navigation system is likely out of date. The road network is constantly changing. A map update includes thousands of new roads, subdivisions, and addresses as well as Points of Interest, such as new restaurants, ATM locations, and gas stations, with a change rate estimated to be nearly 20 percent. Before you get all excited: There’s no such gadget. This is a concept device. The images are artists’ rendering. Now that we’ve convinced you to not email us about where to purchase this, let’s talk about Traveller. Traveller was designed by Nikita Golovlev, an industrial design student in the UK. The idea is a satellite navigation “book” coupled with an e-paper to replace a tourist map. Since concept devices have no limits, Nikita also threw in memory card reader, USB port, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, ability to sync your pics with the location they were taken, and open source platform to allow for other applications to be used.
E-paper makes a flexible display that consumes power only when updated. The design is inspired by a regular tourist map where you get good overview, good level of detail, and quick access combined with the advantages of GPS navigation.
Store your images from your digital camera on the internal drive and sync them to the GPS log. Now you can see exactly where your photos were taken. Share this information directly by using WiFi or piggyback your phone with Bluetooth.

Scientists have constructed a map of a societal communication network based on the mobile phone usage of 7 million individuals during a span of 18 weeks. As the first study to have access to a large amount of direct data of cell phone calls, the results show a counterintuitive requirement of weak ties rather than strong ties to maintain the integrity of a global network. In fact, the scientists found that removing these fragile weak ties can cause a global network to collapse.


A group of scientists (Jukka-Pekka Onnela, et al.) from universities in Finland, the UK, the US, and Hungary recently published the results of their study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

While previous studies on communication networks had to rely on data from opinionated questionnaires of limited sizes, this study is the first to take advantage of cell phone technology to uncover a dimension of social interactions that had been previously unaccounted for at this scale: the strength of ties between individuals.

“Based on our findings, social networks seem to be organized in a way that maximizes information flow at the level of communities, or at the meso-scopic scale as a physicist would say, but not beyond them,” Onnela, who is from Oxford University and the Helsinki University of Technology, told PhysOrg.com.

In this study, the scientists defined the strength of a tie as the aggregate duration of phone calls between two individuals over the studied period. The longer two individuals talk, generally the more information is transferred. (All phone calls had to have been returned at least once for inclusion in the study.) Taken together, the data revealed a skewed distribution showing that, while most individuals talk with just a few others, a small minority communicates with dozens; also, while most individuals talk for only a few minutes, a small fraction spends hours talking.

The scientists then turned to the question of what factors influence the strength of a particular tie. Previous theoretical research has identified three hypotheses. In the global view, tie strength is determined by the total number of short paths an individual has throughout the entire network. In the dyadic view, tie strength is determined solely by the relationship between the two individuals in question. In the weak ties view, tie strength is driven by the two individuals’ local structure, and increases with the overlap of the individuals’ friends.

Onnela and his colleagues found that the stronger the tie between two users, the more their friends overlap—a finding consistent with the weak ties hypothesis. As the scientists explain, this result leads to somewhat of a paradox, as it suggests that global communication networks are better suited to local information transfer than global information transfer. The finding provides the first societal-level confirmation for the weak ties hypothesis.

“Many network measures that are used to characterize complex networks originate in social network analysis,” Onnela said. “In that field, the studied networks are usually fairly small. However, as the size of the system grows to the order of millions, we need to be careful in interpreting these measures in a social context. For example, to measure my ‘social centrality,’ we do not need to know where every individual on the planet is located with respect to me in the global social network.”

The scientists also investigated what would happen to the network overall if either the strong or weak ties were removed. They found that removing the weakest ties (i.e. individuals who only spoke to each other for the shortest time) caused the network to undergo a phase transition and suddenly collapse at a critical point. On the other hand, removing the strongest ties caused the network to gradually shrink, but not break apart.

“This finding is somewhat unexpected, because in most technology and biological networks the strong ties are believed to play a more importance structural role than the weak ties,” the scientists wrote in their paper. “In such systems the removal of the strong ties leads to the network’s collapse.”

The scientists explained these opposite results by pointing out that strong ties are usually within local communities, so their removal would only disintegrate the community but not the global network. Removing the weak ties, on the other hand, destroys the fragile links connecting different communities.

Finally, the group investigated how the dynamics of different tie strengths influence the spread of information in the network. They found that adjusting for the weighted ties slowed the information transfer due to the trapping of information in local communities, where it takes longer to disseminate the information beyond the community through weak ties. Also, contrary to previous studies, the scientists found that intermediate ties play the most important role in spreading information.

“Perhaps the most significant result of this study is the finding concerning the importance of ties of intermediate strength in information transfer, a phenomenon that we called ‘the weakness of weak and strong ties’ in the paper,” said Onnela. “This result goes against the celebrated role of weak ties in information access.”

Onnela also explained that, since the mobile phone communication network is a subset of the underlying social network, the former can be used to infer some large-scale properties of the latter.

“Having a more accurate understanding of the properties of large-scale social networks could turn out to be very important in, for example, epidemiology,” he said. “There it is precisely the large-scale structure of the society that is of interest when contemplating the possibility of an epidemic. I believe our work has also relevance to studying certain sociodynamic phenomena, such as collective opinion formation, because there the outcome will depend on whom you are connected to and how strongly.”

Wherever You Go, There You Are.

That just happens to be the title of Jon Kabat-Zinn's 1994 book on Buddhist meditation. However, you could also apply that description to the U.S. Air Force's Global Positioning System (GPS). This technology knows exactly where you are, even if you don't.
Also referred to as Navstar, GPS has been in operation since the early 1990s. It proved invaluable initially in the Gulf War and in all military endeavors since then many times over. Not only that, GPS has become an essential part of many commercial and personal products that rely on location, position, and navigation.
Every year, GPS goes through constant updates, making it more accurate than ever before. And many low-cost GPS radio chips and navigation receivers have become available to everyone. In fact, one standout trend is to add GPS to as many handheld products as possible.
GPS IN ACTIONThe GPS system comprises a constellation of 24 operational satellites, plus at least three spares, that orbit the earth at 12,548 miles or 10,898 nautical miles (20,200 km) up with an inclination of 55° to the equator. There are six orbits with four satellites each. The rotational period is just two minutes short of 12 hours per orbit. With this arrangement, at least five to eight satellites are always "in view" anywhere on earth. On the ground in Colorado, the USAF maintains a station that monitors and controls the satellites. It ensures that each satellite maintains its position in the constellation and gets the correct position data it needs to transmit back to earth.
Each satellite carries four atomic clocks (two cesium-based and two rubidium-based) that generate dead-on accurate timing pulses. These are used as the basis for generating the signals sent to receivers on earth. Each satellite contains its own unique pseudorandom code (PRC) for differentiating itself from its neighbors.
Also, each satellite transmits what is called ephemeris information, which defines precisely where it is in orbit. Such information is translated into a ground track on earth that will identify its latitude and longitude, providing the requested location. The earth station updates the ephemeris data daily.
Each satellite transmits its PRC and ephemeris data in the microwave L band at 1575.42 MHz. This is called the L1 signal. The receiver can recognize each individual satellite by its unique PRC, just as in other direct-sequence spread-spectrum systems. The PRC is transmitted at a 1-Mbit/s rate using binary phase-shift keying (BPSK). Repeating every 1023 bits, this is called the coarse-acquisition (C/A) code.
Figure 1 shows how this code is used as the chipping code for the navigation data, which occurs at a 50-bit/s rate—yes, 50 bits per second! The navigation code contains the ephemeris data. The overall L1 signal occupies a bandwidth of about 1 MHz.
Each satellite additionally transmits an L2 signal at 1227.6 MHz. The L2 uses another 1023-bit PRC called the P-code. It occurs at a 10.23-Mbit/s rate and is used to chip the 50-bit/s navigation data. The P-code also may be encrypted, in which case it's called the Y-code. The resulting signal then modulates the 1227.6-MHz carrier and the L1 signal as well. The L2 signal is strictly for military use.
Back on Earth, a receiver picks up the signals, does a tricky triangulation calculation, and spits out time, altitude, and position data. The position information is in the form of latitude and longitude. Since time is available, it also can figure velocity. Receiver manufacturers call it PVT, or position-velocity-time output. Using fancy software and map overlays, you can generate a display that shows where you are on a detailed map, much like that used in those 1960s James Bond movies.
The most important issue in getting a GPS fix is being able to "see" the satellites. Given that they're over 12,000 miles away, you need all the signal you can get plus a good antenna and a super-sensitive radio. The only real way to get a signal is to have the antenna in clear view of the satellites. If you go inside, you'll lose the signal. That's why GPS radios only work outside or in a vehicle with a window.
Once you have a good view of the satellites, the receiver takes several minutes to lock on to one of the satellites. It then extracts the data and is passed off to another satellite in view, and again the data is taken. Next, it locks onto a third satellite, and so on. Latitude and longitude data requires three satellites. Altitude and speed calculations require four satellites.
The receiver measures the signal's time of travel from the satellite to the receiver. Knowing the speed of light or radio waves in space (slightly less than 300 million meters/s) and the precise time, it can calculate the distance to the satellite. That distance value is used in the calculations along with the other data from the satellite.
The receiver itself is the usual superhet or direct-conversion type with DSP demodulation and baseband recovery in an on-chip or external CPU. The processor, usually quite powerful, typically is a 32-bit CPU with floating point so it gets the required accuracy.

Self Aware Content


We have seen a lot of press of late on Location Based Services, especially Personal Navigational Devices such as the Tom Tom and more recently the Nokia N95 coming to market. In the US, Networks In Motion announced the 1 millionth paid subscriber to their GPS navigation service and could an article go without mentioning the allusive Google Phone now with fresh rumours linking it to Orange (UK) and HTC as the manufacturer. All market indicators are talking about GPS and the major services it brings.Well Rahil Aggarwal's blog has an interesting and well rounded view on several suggestions of what the next killer mobile phone app (after voice and SMS) is including my favourite Location Based Services. I would like to further this article by stating Sensory Based Services of which GPS is one will be the next killer app.Services and content which utilise the quietly approaching sensory revolution in mobile phones will bring with them significant opportunity. On the hardware side take what Nokia has been doing with technologies including NearField Communication or the Motion Sensor Enabled 5500. Here is a company that has been quietly testing the water with several different sensory devices and there is a growing developer base to go with it. Why would they be doing this? Because they are the most forward thinking device manufacturer on the block.How long will it be until we see the first mobile phone integrated with heart rate monitor? What do all these types of sensors have in common? They help differentiate the devices since the last 'must have' items became common place in all phones - the camera and media player.So getting to the point, I believe the next killer application is the creation, sale and sharing of content that is self aware. By this I mean content that is created in such a way that when some preset sensory rule is triggered the content is activated or the user is notified that the content wishes to be activated. This could be arriving at a certain location, my heart rate reaching a certain point or even a combination of several events. This type of content will be a mix of professional and community contributed (user generated content).At Indaran we call this Intelligent Content. Content that is 'self aware' or more technically 'event driven' will drive the mobile content market moving forward. We see content as having many layers of creativity, firstly there is creativity in the research and writing of the content. Secondly in any rich additions which are done such as voice-over's or adding video content and finally we see creativity in the way the content is told to activate. In this last stage depending on the sensory type, content can be preset to activate based of a complex set of rules which help enrich the user experience. This is where we see the next killer mobile app or service coming from. Yes Personal navigation will be apart of this but there is more much much more.

NEC Launches Global Mobile WiMAX Trial in Taiwan

ASIA Taiwan : NEC Corporation has recently commenced a full-scale mobile WiMAX (16e) trial with Tatung Company (Tatung), a major Taiwanese conglomerate company which runs manufacturing, sales of consumer-electronics and LCDs, as well as ISP business. This mobile WiMAX trial marks the first project to be conducted by NEC outside of Japan, and will continue until September, 2007.
After receiving an order for the trial system from Tatung in January of this year, NEC worked in collaboration with Tatung to prepare for implementation of the trial in Hualien city, which is located in the eastern part of Taiwan. Hualien city plans to utilize the system for tourism and medical services in the future. In this trial, NEC demonstrated internet access and video streaming service which achieved 6 Mbps throughput per user. It also verified the excellent performance of NEC's WiMAX system by realizing smooth handover between base stations, and stable in-vehicle access while running. As a result, Tatung plans to acquire an official WiMAX business license in June. NEC will aim to install commercial systems in Hualien, as well as other service areas.
This trial was conducted as part of the "M-Taiwan" project being lead by the Taiwan. M-Taiwan is a national project to establish a networked information society and to cultivate IT-related industries in the domestic market. Taiwan aims to upgrade its IT infrastructure based on wireless broadband application technology and cultivate domestic industries related to WiMAX, including application services, which are one of the major objectives of this project.
NEC signed a memorandum of understanding with a Taiwan's affiliated organization in February this year as part of the M-Taiwan project to cooperate with Taiwanese hardware and software industries in the development of WiMAX related products and applications. This will play an important role in the spread of WiMAX.
Many government and telecom carrier officials are expected to participate in the Asia Pacific WiMAX Conference & Exhibition (May 14 – 15), which is sponsored by the Taiwan. NEC is ready to receive existing and potential customers at the event where NEC President Kaoru Yano will make the keynote speech and NEC will present live demonstrations of WiMAX with Tatung.
NEC plans to use the valuable experience gained in the Tatung project to deliver integrated network solutions worldwide.

Regardless of who's right or wrong, one thing is certain: In the not-too-distant future, Location Based Services, or LBS, will become as ubiquitous as cell phones are today. And the new technology is expected to change the way we do business, interact with each other and navigate through our daily lives."Location Based Services are the new face of the wireless Internet," says T. John Kim, a professor of urban and regional planning at the University of Illinois.Kim, along with U. of I. postdoctoral fellow Sung-Gheel Jang, developed the protocol for the international standard for Geographic Information Systems, described by the U. of I. professor as "the backbone" of LBS. Earlier this year, the standard created by Kim and Jang was adopted and published by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 19134.Kim said LBS, introduced on cell phones in Korea and Japan, and just becoming available in the U.S., function through a combination of GIS; information, positioning, and Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS) technologies; and the Internet."LBS combine hardware devices, wireless communication networks, geographic information and software applications that provide location-related guidance for customers," Kim said. "It differs from mobile position determination systems such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in that Location Based Services provide much broader, application-oriented location services."While cars or hand-held electronic devices equipped with GPS may be useful when trying to get from one place to another, LBS go beyond providing routes and directions, functioning much the same way as a hotel concierge."For instance," Kim said, "if it's my wife's birthday, and on my way home from the office I need to pick up a birthday cake and a dozen roses, I would want to know not only where is the nearest bakery and floral shop, but where is the cheapest - or the right - place to find these things that I want."The technology can be adapted for a wide range of other functions, he said, ranging from relaying locations of people requiring emergency assistance to first responders to providing alerts about traffic congestion.Kim said the "proactive" decision by the research and standards communities and consumer-products manufacturers to come together and establish an industry standard for LBS before the market is flooded with devices offering concierge services is somewhat unusual, but highly practical."It's about trying to save a tremendous amount of money," he said."Usually when something is coming into the market - take for instance the Beta/VHS video formats - there's a lot of duplication and waste for consumers." In this case, "there's a huge market coming in, so there was agreement that we'd better get started ahead of time."My goal is to provide efficient service at the least cost."To date, Kim said, 29 nations have endorsed the new ISO standard for adoption.

Sprint Threatens Mobile GMaps over GPS

Mobile GMaps is a program that has taken advantage of Java's built-in standards to provide GPS integration with Google Maps service. The program is different from Google's Maps for Mobile, in that it was written by a third-party, includes standard GPS support, and pulls map data from Google's servers.
The advantage here is clear: Users can take advantage of the gpsOne service built into virtually every Sprint phone, as well as benefit from the features of Google Maps. But, recently, Sprint decided to attempt to obfuscate the free GPS services that Java provides. Sprint has threatened the creator of Mobile GMaps with legal action... unless Mobile GMaps makes it difficult to provide Sprint users with GPS services. However, this is clearly SLAPP-based tactics from the nation's third largest wireless provider. Users simply need to enter IP Address 68.28.31.49:5017 into the PDE server area of any gpsOne-enabled Java application, Mobile GMaps simply typed this code in automatically for users on Sprint to use. In fact, once the author is forced (legally or not) to remove this, users can simply re-add it to the program to restore functionality. We have yet to see any legal basis from Sprint for making Mobile GMaps remove this simple IP address from their application. Since the application is using open standards, that would work on any Java & gpsOne-enabled carrier (Sprint, Bell Mobility, etc), the remainder of the software is undisputedly legal. Mobile GMaps

For those not familiar with the service, you may also need to enable Developer Root on your device in order to use Mobile GMaps GPS. Wow, I can't believe I didn't know about this before. My developer account was already active so that was the easiest thing ever. I don't like it as much as Sprint Navigator, but I'm all about free.

Doesn't seem "free" in the sense that the developer page is only available to developers for Sprint or their mobile technology and that you still have to pay $400 for the verisign license. Unless I'm missing a secret here.

Mobile Ubuntu Linux Coming To A Smartphone Near You

After years of waiting for a successful mobile version of Linux, it looks like Linux is finally on its way to a cell phone near you thanks to some Ubuntu developers and Intel.
Ubuntu programmers will build a mobile version of their Debian-based Linux OS through a partnership with Intel. Intel plans to use the OS with a new low-power processor and chipset in smartphones.
The new Ubuntu mobile Linux is slatted to ship in October this year. How can they get this OS to market so soon? It could mean a couple of things. The first is that this OS is more than three-fourths finished. The second is that the Ubuntu community and Intel have underestimated the challenges in developing a new mobile OS, especially when it comes to issues like hardware and battery life management.
To date the story around mobile Linux has been more hype than reality. Mobile versions of Linux account for only 6 percent of the global handset OS market.
Can Intel really push Ubuntu Linux on to cell phones? The company's reach into the handset market does not equal its influence in the desktop market.
