I’m a big believer in the power location-based services. Everyday activities like local search, weather and communications can be greatly simplified by using automatic location.

The biggest obstacles (and, to be fair, the biggest enablers) of location-based services, are the wireless carriers. After being forced into the location business by E911 mandates, they’ve largely locked the doors to that location. That GPS chip in the phone you just bought? More likely than not, you can’t access the location it finds.

The carriers want you to pay a toll for every application. Want local weather? $3/month. Navigation services? $10/month. Movies? $4/month. And that’s on top of the $15-$25/month they want for the data service. If desktop Web services were priced the same way that carriers want to price applications, the bill for the applications I use would be $200-$300 a month.

More realistically, my Web bill would be close to zero, because I wouldn’t use anything. The only reason I pay Comcast for Internet access is the applications that AOL, Google, Yahoo! and numerous startups have created. The total dollar value of Comcast applications I use is exactly $0.00.

Likewise, the applications I use on my mobile phone are applications created by Google (maps and mail) and Yahoo! (mobile portal). They are the reasons I pay Sprint anything for wireless data. And they would be a lot more compelling to a lot more uses if they were location enabled.

Instant traffic and weather are the benefits, location is an enabler. Consumers can’t see the tremendous value of these applications because the carriers won’t let the applications have access to the location. Not seeing the benefit, consumers don’t buy wireless data. Everyone loses - the carriers, application developers and consumers.

We’ll eventually land at the same model we have for Web access. In the meantime, the carriers will have lost a lot of opportunity.

smart2go from Nokia

Let me tell you about why I love smart2go from Nokia.

smart2go is Nokia’s free software for speaking to a Bluetooth GPS device on your S60 handset.

A lot of new handsets coming out soon, such as the N95 and the E90, come with integrated GPS modules. And there have been applications for using such a device on the market for quite a while now, but all of them are pretty expensive, so Nokia has been giving us “waypoint/landmark” and general “directional” location software for a few months with S60v3 devices. This has been a pretty clever move on their part, and I’m glad that instead of sticking with a half-assed deployment or “pilot” like they have done in the past, they’ve actually been spending some real resources on this type of thing.

So while I was getting ready for my trip to Chicago with Liz, I grabbed smart2go and installed it, and setup an inexpensive Bluetooth GPS (which I had next-day air’ed from Expansys/MobilePlanet, and wasn’t going to get to my house before we left, so my UPS dispatch told me where I could meet up with the driver, which is pretty nice of ‘em) and started using smart2go.

Now, the local services and such can be searched ad-hoc while in the application, so you can search for places to go eat, drink, and be merry, or find historical sites, businesses based on name, address, or category, things like that. Usually you only get this type of information when you’re paying hundreds of dollars for the privilege, the software is never cheap. But the way Nokia does it is on a subscription basis. You can give them a micropayment of $9USD or something for seven days of access, which is what I did. I then installed the maps using the Nokia Map Loader for places I spend time (DC/VA/NY/MA/RI/IL/IA/CA/UK/etc) and started checking things out.

Since you can get updates and such over the Internet via the WiFi on the phone or the data service from my operator (T-Mobile’s EDGE service in my case) the information is pretty current, though there are a lot of things it didn’t seem able to find that have been around for a while, but I was able to find them by address (which I looked up with Google Maps on my phone), and then set them as landmarks. I put in some of my contacts, since smart2go lets you search based on Contact information on the device.

The navigation part is pretty good, and uses a variety of voices. I went with English(UK) because the woman’s voice is easy to understand and she uses the word “MOTOR WAY” for highways and freeways, which I find charming.

While in Chicago I used smart2go to find the nearest Starbucks. Several times. I used it to find nearby places to eat, grab a snack, go shopping, and to find Levenger inside the Macys on Michigan Ave. I used it to find El stops (though usually asking a person was faster), and to help me see how far of a walk it would be to get between places (which usually meant I took a cab), and all sorts of other neat tricks.

And I’ve used navigation systems before, and handheld systems as well. They are all interesting and some are better than others, such as the Garmin nuvi line. But the idea of using such a thing on a mobile device never really appealed to me until I saw for myself just how nice it was to have, and for one really killer app that I think a lot of people forget about. I know I did.

You can send your current location to a friend, via MMS/SMS/Email, and they can trivially load that into smart2go, and come find you based on their location.

Today my subscription had expired, and all of my saved landmarks and services are there, and the existing map data is still available, so the only thing I lost appears to be the searchable services, which is fine when I know what I want anyway, or at least can look up the address. But I have to say, it is awfully nice being able to just type in “Starbucks” and find the nearest one to me. Nokia offers a variety of subscriptions for the service, but I change handsets enough that I’d probably be better off on the weekly and monthly options. I hate that every time I get a new handset I have to re-purchase software that I just bought six months ago. Developers really need to stop using the IMEI of the device to lock software. It is completely insane. Some developers will cut you a break or give you a freebie at times, but most don’t.

Now I don’t know many people with an S60 device and a GPS module. But that is something that could easily change as location-based services become more useful and attractive to people. Having solid mobile search to navigate meatspace with ease makes travel a much easier endeavor for people, and applications like Metro to help you know what form of mass transit you should be taking to get between destinations makes it a trivial task to get around in most cities.

smart2go is a fantastic application. It looks nice, has a good feel to it, and is pretty snappy though a hair slow at times. In all honesty it is probably slow, but compared to how s60 devices were a year ago, it’s hard to find fault with it today. Nokia managed to set my standards much lower than they should be with the 6600, 3650, 3660, 9500, and other handsets.

My only complaint is that when you’re traveling on foot (and you tell it so), it still gets completely spastic if you stop walking. Like, you know, at a Don’t Walk sign. It spins around all confused and trying to re-navigate paths. And when I’m on foot, I don’t need to be told that my next right is 200 yards away. Tell me when I’m about 35 yards away! But that is a pretty minor complaint when the rest of the application and use of it was so polished and easy.

Ultimately, I’m quite pleased with it. And I’m really, really looking forward to the E90. My E70 came through quite well on the trip though, and was an invaluable resource for messaging, capturing candids, and helping me find the nearest cup of cappuccino for my wife. And that alone was worth the nine bucks for the search subscription.

In case anyone at Nokia is reading this, your Chicago store stinks. The pretentious over-the-top video artwork was way overdone, and the staff was really not that familiar with your own product line. One of the people that worked there was pretty knowledgeable, but rather arrogant about it, and acted like he was selling Ferraris instead of Connecting People. I think the overall strategy of being snotty doesn’t suit you. Humanize this technology. Help people be better people. This notion of mobile-tech-as-bling isn’t becoming of you.

This article is one in a series of 10 stories we're running this week covering today's most significant emerging technologies. It's part of our annual "10 Emerging Technologies" report, which appears in the March/April print issue of Technology Review.

Finding your way around a new city can be exasperating: juggling maps and guidebooks, trying to figure out where you are on roads with no street signs, talking with locals who give directions by referring to unfamiliar landmarks. If you're driving, a car with a GPS navigation system can make things easier, but it still won't help you decide, say, which restaurant suits both your palate and your budget. Engineers at the Nokia Research Center in Helsinki, Finland­, hope that a project called Mobile Augmented Reality Applications will help you get where you're going--and decide what to do once you're there.

Last October, a team led by Markus Kähäri unveiled a proto­type of the system at the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality. The team added a GPS sensor, a compass, and accelerometers to a Nokia smart phone. Using data from these sensors, the phone can calculate the location of just about any object its camera is aimed at. Each time the phone changes location, it retrieves the names and geographical coördinates of nearby landmarks from an external database. The user can then download additional information about a chosen location from the Web--say, the names of businesses in the Empire State Building, the cost of visiting the building's observatories, or hours and menus for its five eateries.

The Nokia project builds on more than a decade of academic research into mobile augmented reality. Steven Feiner, the director of Columbia University's Computer Graphics and User Interfaces Laboratory, undertook some of the earliest research in the field and finds the Nokia project heartening. "The big missing link when I started was a small computer," he says. "Those small computers are now cell phones."

Despite the availability and fairly low cost of the sensors the Nokia team used, some engineers believe that they introduce too much complexity for a commercial application. "In my opinion, this is very exotic hardware to provide," says Valentin Lefevre, chief technology officer and cofounder of Total Immersion­, an augmented-reality company in Suresnes, France. "That's why we think picture analysis is the solution." Relying on software alone, Total Immersion's­ system begins with a single still image of whatever object the camera is aimed at, plus a rough digital model of that object; image-­recognition algorithms then determine what data should be super­imposed on the image. The company is already marketing a mobile version of its system to cell-phone operators in Asia and Europe and expects the system's first applications to be in gaming and advertising.

Nokia researchers have begun working on real-time image-recognition algorithms as well; they hope the algorithms will eliminate the need for location sensors and improve their system's accuracy and reliability. "Methods that don't rely on those components can be more robust," says Kari Pulli, a research fellow at the Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, CA.

All parties agree, though, that mobile augmented reality is nearly ready for the market. "For mobile-phone applications, the technology is here," says Feiner. Location Based Search & Services- Impact on Traditional GIS Industry

Traditional GIS software have ruled the roost on desktop plaforms for over two deca

des with a firm foothold on public and private sectors. Major Players like ESRI, MapInfo, Intergraph etc have created a niche for themselves in their respective vertical market segments in the GIS industry.
During the late 90's two significant events challenged the established norms of GIS industry. It was during this era, that the GIS industry also woke up to a whole new challenge to reorganize their business models to cater to the interoperability demands of the homeland security initiative. The use of GIS terminology itself was under attack with critics claiming either "Geospatial" or "Geoscience" to be more appropriate to encompass the set of related sciences of the likes of GPS, Remote Sensing etc.
The first event saw the advent of the Location Based Services(LBS) in the burgeoning mobile market leading to the explosion of development services targeting this platform. The other and in more ways more significant event was the extension of internet search engine into the geographic space. The introduction of Google Earth added a new dimension to search services now based on geographic location. Other competitors like Microsoft, Yahoo followed suit with their data rich clients on the web.
Traditional GIS industry responded well by announcing new business intiatives to meet the LBS challenge. MapInfo took the lead by reorienting their business solutions towards Location Intelligence and ESRI and Integraph did not fall behind by way of their market introduction of web based geospatial services built on Service Oriented Architecture(SOA). Finally GIS consumers saw the light of decoupled geospatial services which have been in demand for quite some time. However, the initiative lacked a cohesive approach to the target demand for integrated GPS, GIS and telematics services. The demand though, saw the birth of many smaller players with their integrated suite in offering but they however, lacked penetration to make inroads outside their regional markets.
However, it is the search space that I personally feel that the GIS industry might have missed the boat completely. Major players of the GIS Industry have been dragging their feet over adoption of interoperability standards eventhough the demand for it had precipitated ever since the inception of homeland security initiative. As a consequence, even with the existent infrastructure from data clearing houses managed both by public and private sectors, the initiative could not take off beyond their academic research appeal. But with the birth of online mapping services, consumers were able to finally put to rest their concerns about the data format and currency without the need to either collect or process data.
In summary, the economic fallout of this missed opportunities is minimal with GIS players well positioned in their strongfold AM/FM/BI segments of the market. However, the GIS industry have lost a golden opportunity to appeal to a wider audience outside their safe-net GIS users.

Berg Insight Says 66 Million Machines Will be Connected to North American Cellular Networks by 2011

Gothenburg, Sweden 15 March 2007: According to a new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of machines connected to cellular networks in North America will reach 66 million by 2011. At the end of 2006 there were about 9 million active cellular and satellite wireless M2M connections in the US and Canada. Trimble's Tiny Surface Mount GPS Receiver Adds WAAS and EGNOS Capability

HANNOVER, Germany, -- Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB) introduced today a new firmware for its Copernicus(TM) GPS receiver -- Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) capability. The new firmware allows users to take advantage of satellite-based augmentation systems for improved positioning accuracy.

The announcement was made today at CeBIT, the world's largest trade fair showcasing digital IT and telecommunications solutions for home and work environments.

The Copernicus GPS receiver is a thumbnail-sized, surface-mount, low power Global Positioning System (GPS) module for mobile devices. With major advancements in performance, sensitivity and startup times, the Copernicus GPS module enables system integrators to easily add GPS capability to a mobile device with minimal impact on its size or battery life at a very economical price. It is ideal for adding GPS to Bluetooth appliances, sport accessories, personal navigators or cameras, computer and communication peripherals as well as vehicle tracking, navigation, and security products.

The Copernicus GPS module is a complete drop-in, ready-to-go receiver that provides position, velocity and time data. The receiver features the new Trimble TrimCore(TM) patented software technology that provides extremely fast startup times and high performance in foliage and urban canyon environments. MocoNews - Unhealthily Obsessed with Mobile Content - Microsoft Does Buy TellMe; Mobile Search A Big Reason

The reports on this were correct: Microsoft has made a big play in mobile/voice search and has bought TellMe, a provider of nationwide directory assistance, enterprise customer service and voice-enabled mobile search. The price was not disclosed, but if reports are true ($800 million to a billion) they will have to disclose it in SEC filings down the line. Tellme is profitable and has raised over $235 million in venture funding prior to this....this will be Microsoft’s biggest purchase since 2002. From the release: “Potential areas of development resulting from the deal will range from hosted voice-enabled customer service solutions that complement Microsoft’s existing unified communications offerings to voice user interfaces in existing Microsoft products to search services on mobile phones that integrate with Live Search for mobile offerings.” The company’s service is already used to fixed-line consumer services such as finding local businesses, driving directions, sports scores, stock quotes, weather, news, movie show times and more, so mobile voice search is a natural extension of that. The deal is expected to be completed in Q2 this year. Tellme, which has more than 320 employees, will continue to operate from its Mountain View, CA, headquarters as part of the Microsoft Business Division. The Tellme business is expected to be maintained, and members of the Tellme executive team and staff are expected to join Microsoft. Bloomberg: Tellme had backing from former leaders at Microsoft. Browser rival Netscape CEO and co-founder Mike McCue will join Microsoft after the purchase is completed. Another co-founder, Hadi Partovi, was a former Microsoft Internet executive. Early investors in the company included former Microsoft SVP Brad Silverberg and Netscape CEO James Barksdale. Euro-politics strikes another blow for the advancement of mankind

Political infighting threatens Europe's satnav plans -

Political infighting is undermining the European Union's biggest ever joint technology programmeme: the Galileo satellite navigation network.
By 2011, Galileo was to have ended reliance on America's Global Positioning System system, a network that can be switched off at the whim of the Pentagon. But divisive power struggles among the eight European companies that comprise the industrial consortium chosen by the EU to run Galileo are putting the programme's future in doubt.
Galileo's 30 satellites are to be launched into mid-Earth orbits at a cost of around €3.2 billion, with one third of that coming from the EU, and the rest coming from the consortium, which hopes to recoup its investment by selling location-based technology and services.
By the end of 2006, the consortium was to have formed a single Galileo operating company and have appointed an independent chief executive so the project has a "clear decision making structure" says Paul Verhoef, Galileo programme manager at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.
However, no company has been formed, and the consortium remains rudderless - and unable to place orders for Galileo's critical satellites.
National interests
"This is posing major problems. As time schedules slip, costs go up," says Verhoef. "And Galileo is now at risk of running to unacceptable schedules." A German technology analyst, Bitkom, reckons Galileo will not be up and running until 2014 or later – which represents a delay of at least three years from the original plan.
"The EU is now not talking to the consortium until it sorts itself out and comes back as a single company," says Richard Peckham of EADS Astrium in Portsmouth, UK. "The EU can't continue to negotiate with eight individual companies."
National interests are one of the roots of the debilitating stasis. While each consortium member's nation has secured some aspects of Galileo's operations on its own territory, arguments continue.
'Outrageous demands'
"The Spanish firms are the current block," says one source close to the consortium's negotiations. "They are making outrageous demands over guaranteed workshare arrangements. But Spain has already secured a completely unnecessary control centre and people aren't having any more."
The multinational arguments strike a chord with observers familiar with some of the problems experienced by Airbus Industrie, the troubled pan-European plane maker, which has been riven with UK, French, German and Spanish rivalries. "Galileo is now being compared with the Airbus situation. Unfortunately that analysis is correct," says Verhoef.
Continued delays in ordering the satellites are having an expensive knock-on effect, too. Last week, Galileo's technology developer, the European Space Agency, was forced to order Giove-A2, a €30 million Galileo signal testing satellite. It had not planned for the satellite – and only ordered it so it could place it in orbit and maintain rights to Galileo's frequency allocations (see Back-up satellite to secure Galileo navigation system).
Reassign frequencies
When the current orbiting test craft Giove-A stops broadcasting Galileo signals in mid-2008 when its fuel runs out, the International Telecommunications Union can reassign the frequencies to others unless another craft replaces it.
Originally, Galileo's first four operational satellites (which have been ordered) were to have been in orbit by 2006 – but they have been pushed back to 2009 or beyond, not soon enough to maintain the frequencies. Another test craft, Giove-B, has suffered repeated onboard computer problems and is still grounded. If that craft can eventually launch, however, the newly ordered Giove-A2 satellite, which is funded by taxpayers, may remain grounded after all.
"We need Giove-A2 because the situation has evolved. We don't have the consortium's contract signed and we don't know who will take care of the operational Galileo satellites," says ESA spokesman Dominique Detain.
The EU, as major bankroller of the project, has had enough. Wolfgang Tiefensee, president of the EU's Council of Transport Ministers under the current German presidency, is demanding to know when the consortium plans to incorporate a company, appoint a CEO and place firm orders for the Galileo satellite fleet.
"The consortium must fulfil the conditions and obligations it agreed to in 2005," says a spokesman for Tiefensee's office. "We expect substantial progress by June."
Competition from China
Tiefensee is expected to reveal the industry's response at a meeting of European Transport Ministers on 22 March. "We'll see in the next couple of weeks how this pans out," says Verhoef.
But even if the consortium comes good, doubts remain over Galileo's commercial viability. Russia is improving its global satnav fleet and will have 18 spacecraft in orbit by the end of the year. And China has said that it's 30-satellite Beidou satnav network, originally intended for its military, will be an open system usable by anyone.
Fears that China may be planning to go its own way on a satnav network – despite putting some seed money into Galileo – were heightened last week when its delegation failed to turn up at a key all-nations satellite positioning conference in Munich, Germany.
The multinational consortium that the EU appointed to run Galileo in December 2005 comprises TeleOp (Germany), EADS Astrium (France/Germany), Inmarsat (UK), Thales (France), Aena (Spain), Finmeccanica (Italy), Hispasat (Spain) and Alcatel-Lucent (France).

How Pocket Positioning Will Change Daily Life

Mobile phones, cameras and wristwatches are all being equipped with GPS technology. In this brave new world, data will not only tell us where we are, but also where we can shop, eat and sleep.

With its GPS-aligned maps, Nokia wants to put Europe and the world on your mobile phone. Almost every company in the business is jumping into the market.He holds the world in his hand. The world rotates smoothly around its axis, then the breakneck nosedive begins: towards Europe, Germany, Berlin and finally Berlin's city center.
The first streets of houses become visible, and eventually the building in front of which he stands: a renovated factory from the Wilhelminian age on Invalidenstrasse. Pleased, Michael Halbherr glances down on the mobile phone that has just verified his exact position.
"That's only the beginning," Halbherr says. His Swiss German sing-song accent and his woollen sweater make him seem almost chummy and homely. But looks can be deceptive. The 42-year-old chats with jovial serenity about how groundbreaking his system could become -- not just for users but for the entire industry.
Halbherr is the director of the Berlin-based software company Gate5, which was acquired by Nokia -- still the world's largest producer of mobile phones, with a 30 percent market share -- last autumn. The engineer is responsible for working with his team of 70 employees to make the cartographic altitude flights, that were until now mainly the domain of Internet services like Google Earth, available to mobile phone users.
The system, recently introduced at the 3GSM wireless technology conference in Barcelona, is called Nokia Maps. It is the first time a mobile phone producer is has simultaneously gone head to head with a navigation system against providers like Tom-Tom and the search engine company Google.
The results are remarkable. Even hard-boiled Google earthlings are surprised by the computer-game-like quality of the mobile phone graphics. And many people are startled upon picking up a mobile phone and seeing it automatically determine its own location -- without having been provided the name of a single street.

It's a GPS chip that calculates its own location on the basis of the positions of 20 navigation satellites orbiting the Earth -- just as navigators in millions of cars all over the world already do every day.
A few clicks are all it takes for Halbherr to download a city guide for just a few euros. He wants to know whether there is a restaurant nearby -- and the mobile phone promptly works out the route to take him there. Then he clicks on the telephone number appearing on his display to reserve a table. And while he's at it, he also sends the position data to his colleague, who receives it on his own GPS-equipped mobile phone, which will then show him the way to the table.
"Until now, you needed a travel guide, a navigator and a mobile phone to do this," Halbherr says. "But it's much easier combining everything in a single mobile phone."
Halbherr's system turns the world into a physically explorable database and mobile phones into a kind of remote control with which to systematically zap one's way through real space.

Navigation technology is considered one of the most important trends at this year's Cebit consumer electronics fair, which opens next week in Hanover. A veritable GPS fever has gripped broad sectors of the industry. The year 2007 could go down in the history of technology as that of all-encompassing GPS-ization -- even China now wants to follow in the footsteps of the United States and Europe and set up its own satellite navigation system.
It's not the first time a technological spring fashion spreads to all sorts of technological devices: First, cheap photo chips transformed notebooks, personal organizers and mobile phones into cameras. Then every conceivable device had to feature an integrated MP3 player, even watches. Now large parts of the electronics industry have set their eyes on GPS technology.
There's hardly a brand of devices out there that isn't being upgraded with a GPS chip: mobile PCs produced by Asus, iPaq mini computers by Hewlett Packard, picture cameras by Ricoh, wristwatches by Casio and Suunto. Even Sony's pocket game console, the Playstation Portable, is being sold with a navigator function -- at least in Japan.
New opportunities
Many companies, especially in Germany, are seeing new opportunities open up. The Yahoo search engine, for example, wants to gain a new competitive advantage vis-à-vis Google by providing users with location-specific search services. Marco Börries is the director of Yahoo's project, called Yahoo Go. He was once dubbed the "German Bill Gates" for daring to challenge Microsoft with his Star Office suite. The new positioning-based search engine was largely developed by Börries's Hamburg team of 35 people.
Navigation technology could reshuffle the deck for chip producers too. At present, many quality devices contain a chip produced by Californian company Sirf. Now German chip producer Infineon wants to cut off as large as possible a piece of the pie for itself by providing a tiny new mobile phone chip called the Hammerhead II. Barely the size of an oat flake, the new chip is said to require only 0.3 miliwatt of energy -- considerably less than the rival product, which can suck a battery dry in just a few hours. Infineon's Reiner Schönrock predicts that one out of three mobile phones could be equipped with a satellite navigation system within a few years.

But will these be used by jealous girlfriends on their boyfriends in the future?But the generalized frenzy surrounding positioning technology sometimes takes a whimsical turn. Those who repeatedly find themselves having to search for their dog can equip the problem pooch with a roughly matchbox-sized satellite box made by the Swedish company Benefon. The device then communicates the dog's location to the owner's mobile phone whenever necessary. It's easy to imagine a jealous wife slipping the device into the car or her husband's coat pocket to find out whether he's really been working late hours at the office. Still the product's price promises to keep it relatively exclusive for the time being: A positioning box costs about €400 ($523).
Life after telecommuting
For years, the end of physical space was evoked -- utopia seemed to lie in the vastness of cyberspace. According to some cyber-visionaries, the future belonged to telecommuters who would require neither offices nor airplanes. But the reality of globalization looks different: Never before have people moved, traveled and flown as much as they do today. Now the personal electronics industry is adapting to this mobile lifestyle by undergoing a kind of "topographical revolution."
"The more solid social orders grow volatile, the more people resort to geographical frames of reference," historian and essayist Karl Schlögel believes. "Today, in the age of Google Earth, we're veritably flooded with cartographic material."
But not everything bearing the GPS label actually contains useful navigation technology. Many producers are still disoriented in the face of the possibilities offered by the technological means available. The Blackberry 8800, for example, does dispose of a GPS chip. But those who want to use the pre-installed positioning function are likely to be disappointed: Uninspiring fragments from Blackberry Maps wobble sluggishly onto the display, the graphics are abysmal and the possibility of navigating from A to B seems never to have been heard of. It's enough to put users off GPS technology for good.
Nokia has opted for a more professional path. For the Finnish corporation, location-based services determine the marching route. The Finns have announced they will introduce three new GPS-equipped mobile phones on the market over the course of the next few months alone. Owing to Halbherr's brilliant vector graphics, Nokia appears poised to finally make positioning technology sexy and playful.

This intuitive handling method is made possible by the system's complex architecture -- the Swiss engineer's area of expertise. Halbherr studied electrical engineering at Zurich's Technical University before submitting his dissertation on parallel computing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. "In the old days, you would have needed a mainframe computer to calculate navigation maps," Halbherr says. "But today's smart phones have such powerful processors they can do it just as well."
Turning an industry's habits on their head
The system of payment also turns many of the industry's old paradigms on their head: Those who want to can download the maps of more than 150 countries onto their mobile phone via radio data transmission and free of charge (or they can download them onto a computer connected to the Internet at www.smart2go.com). What is more, the software isn't exclusive to Nokia mobile phones -- it also works on smart phones featuring Windows Mobile. Only those who want additional services such as navigation or voice output are asked to pay.
The unconventional business model was controversial at Nokia originally. Indeed, the proposal to develop Nokia Maps in Germany is also said to have been met with resistance from within the company headquarters in Espoo. Germany, after all, is a high-wage country with unruly trade unions -- not to mention the fact that its educational system has been in a state of crisis since the first Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) study gave German schools poor marks. To top things off, Nokia Maps was to be developed by Gate5, a software firm whose roots lie somewhere between the bohème of digital art and the computer hacking subculture.
Gate5 co-founders Andreas Steinhauser and Frank Rieger were once firmly rooted in the local hacker and art scenes. Rieger served as spokesman for the famed Chaos Computer Club for a time. They already small-timed their way through conferences and galleries for the Art+Com company with their Terravision program 10 years ago.
Terravision was a kind of gigantic three-dimensional world simulator that pre-empted much of what Google Earth later managed to stage so successfully. The digital journey around the world was controlled by visitors applying pressure to a big discoidal mouse.
Swiss electrical engineer Halbherr's task now consists of grounding the high-flying Terravision developed by Berlin's hacker bohème, shrinking it to mobile phone format and distributing it to millions of pockets the world over.
It's an expedition into the unknown, undertaken on a terrain where many have lost their way before. Recent pioneers have tried again and again to transplant GPS technology from the car to the mobile phone -- unsuccessfully until now. Siemens, for example, offered a GPS-equipped mobile phone as far back as 2005 -- it flopped. Finnish company Benefon already presented a similar device as early as 1999.

The success of GPS-equipped mobile phones was stalled, until now, by a simple obstacle: The GPS systems used in cars are only partly suited for use by pedestrians. That's still true of the system used by Nokia, as a simple test demonstrates: Standing on Invalidenstrasse in Berlin, Halbherr requests the route to the nearby Brandenburg Gate. Nokia Maps calls on him to suffer two kilometers (1.2 miles) through drizzle -- as if he were a car. What the navigator won't tell him is that it might be simpler to just take the subway train for three stops.
"Ground truthing" is the technical term for this comparison between abstract data and reality. But Nokia isn't responsible for what's true on the ground. That's the job of the two map producers, Atlas and Navteq. Their employees now actually have to cover an immense number of routes on foot, instead of driving them as they used to.
Walking through the rain or taking the subway: It's on those kinds of subtle differences that the success of mobile search engines will likely depend. It will depend, in other words, on people voting with their feet.
"Mobile positioning could have enormous effects on everyday life; it's comparable to the watershed moment that took place in the 16th century," says Christoph Schlieder, a computer science professor in Bamberg, Germany. "It was then that pocket watches replaced turret clocks. This form of mobile time-measurement turned the entire world of work inside out."
So just where will the pocket-size navigators lead us? "That," says Halbherr disarmingly, "is something I'm curious to find out about, too."

Intel Gets Approval To Build $2.5 Billion China Fabrication Plant

SHANGHAI — Intel Corp has won approval to build a $2.5 billion, 12-inch wafer plant in northern China for CPU chip sets, according to a statement issued Tuesday from China's National Development and Reform Commission.
The plant would use 90-nanometer technology and produce 52,000 wafers a month at full capacity, according to the NDRC, which is China's top planning group. The plan calls for the fab to be in the city of Dalian.
Little more was known, but sources familiar with the project said an announcement is expected from Intel in the next few weeks.
Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said, "We have announced no plans and will not comment on speculation of this nature."
If true, the development could have wide-ranging impact on the US semiconductor industry. The US government exercises tight control over the export of advanced high-tech manufacturing techniques, and that should restrict Intel from using anything under 0.18 micron in China. Even its NOR flash is made on more advanced processes.
Intel building a fab in China would signal a loosening of export control policy, and allow US semiconductor gear makers to increase sales to China. Yet such a development would also contradict a current Bush administration attempt to tighten export control policy in regards to China.
In January, an official at the Dalian Economic Technological Development Zone confirmed that it was in talks with Intel. "It's not only for packaging," the official said, declining to offer more details.
China is Intel's second largest market behind the US, so there is good reason for the company to consider putting a plant here. Chipsets would be a way to experiment with advanced production here. Currently, Intel also farms out some of its chipset production to Asian foundries.
Yet there is also good reason to be skeptical about such a project. Rumors that Intel will build a chip plant in China have cropped up perennially for at least five years. Each time nothing has happened, or the "advanced" chip making facility turned out to be a chip packaging plant. Intel runs such plants in Shanghai and Chengdu.
Long-time rumors have also held that Intel will build a plant in India.

Google Adds Photos To Google Maps - All Points Blog

The bottom line is that when you do a search on Google Maps, you can now click on the teardrops found to see images and logos related to the geography, along with the regular business info. The images are from Google (logos, storefronts) and images businesses upload. While pleasant, from a geographic perspective, some images, like this one on a local coffee place, are not necessarily helpful for those trying to find the location.

Our motivation for the photos--just like the reviews and 'more info' options--is about creating a greater sense of place. This role is expressed in your use of 'pleasant', as in 'it was pleasant to see what this place is like.' Our testing shows that photos often mean helpful, reassuring, and most of all, confirming, as in "Yes, that's the place I was remembering -- I'd forgotten that they had a big sun face over the espresso machine. That's the one I want to go to."

Of course, some photos do help identify locations by showing buildings in context, but that is just one of their uses.

These databases are big and take a while to update, but maybe not so long as you suggest. While the intervals vary, they trend smaller even as the scale of the updates trends larger. This is a battle between more and better computers, faster networking, and similar Moore's Law factors on one side, and more data, greater resolution, and richer data types on the other. In this fight, time seems to be on the side of reduced intervals between updates, but the progression from text to images and beyond keeps the scales somewhat in balance.

reLive: Automatically Map Your Mobile Photos

oday mapping veteran AtlasCT (est. 1987) is launching a new mobile photo geotagging application for Java ME called reLive!. It seems similar to Yahoo!’s geotagging program for Flickr, Zonetag. However, reLive! is not meant to only geotag individual photos, but also connect them on the map in the context of a trip. When paired with a GPS system, reLive! lets you automatically map tagged photos, video, or virtual postcards you make along your trip. Since each photo is also time stamped, the photos, video, and postcards can also be ordered along the path of your trip. The whole trip can also be viewed and shared through an account on their website. Their current default example is of a meandering trip through Barcelona.

The program won the Social Networking award for Europe at the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge at 3GSM in Barcelona. The application was designed to show off AtlasCT’s vector based mapping program, which requires smaller data transfers and flexes with varying mobile screen sizes. AtlasCT is not targeting consumers directly. In a deal made with Nokia the mapping software comes pre-installed on all Nokia smartphones. They are currently seeking more OEM deals in the US and believe there is at least one camera manufacturer ready to incorporate GPS right into their device.

The OEM route seems like a smart move until GPS becomes more pervasive. Only a small percentage of US phones support GPS without some kind of Bluetooth addition (Helio and Boost support GPS over their whole network). The frequencies allotted to the Galileo satellite navigation system will be safeguarded under a deal announced by the European Space Agency (ESA) on Monday.
Surrey Satellite Technology (SST) in the UK was awarded the contract to build a satellite that will permanently secure Galileo's frequencies. "From now on, there will always be a European navigation satellite in space," the ESA announcement promised.
Billed as a rival to the US Global Positioning System (GPS), the Galileo project will see 30 satellites deployed at an orbital altitude of 23,000 kilometres and the network should be made commercially operational by 2010.
To claim the frequencies for the network, ESA sent up a first satellite, called GIOVE-A, in December 2005. It started emitting test calibration signals on 12 January, 2006. A second satellite, GIOVE-B, was scheduled to launch later that year, but the mission has twice been postponed because of technical problems. It is now pencilled in for late 2007.
Under the rules of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an operator risks losing frequency rights if a break in service lasts longer than two years. Thus, if GIOVE-A breaks down and GIOVE-B is delayed significantly, ESA could lose the frequency altogether.
Back up system
Under the new contract, SST will develop a new satellite, called GIOVE-A2, to serve as a backup. GIOVE-A2 will be ready for launch in the second half of 2008, ESA says, although the exact launch date would depend on the state of GIOVE-A and GIOVE-B.
The satellite, costing €25 to 30 million ($35 to 40 million), will be based on the design of GIOVE-A, which was also built by SST.
ESA has already awarded contracts for the development and launch of Galileo's first four satellites to a consortium of companies.
The navigation system will be compatible with GPS but is being promoted as more accurate. Unlike GPS, Galileo will stay under civilian control, increasing the European Union's strategic independence from the US.
The project has hit other hitches, however. A contract for ceding operation of Galileo to an eight-member private consortium has still to be agreed and signed, and the EU has yet to decide where its overseer, a public body called the Galileo Supervisory Authority, will be sited.
